Good health and eyesight are vital to everyone, no matter where you live in Canada. For the residents of remote northern Ontario communities, accessing an eye doctor or ophthalmologist is a huge challenge. Communities are too small and too isolated, and weather and transportation provide further barriers. Without eye care services, people with serious eye conditions risk permanent vision loss or blindness.
Since its inaugural trek across northern Ontario in 1972, the CNIB Eye Van has grown from a small, modified Winnebago motor home to a state-of-the-art, fully equipped custom designed cab with a 48-foot trailer staffed by a team of rotating ophthalmologists and two ophthalmic nurses. This innovative program is not only unique to Northern Ontario, but is the only program of its kind in Canada.
Each year from March to November, the Eye Van team carries out vision-screening, treatment of eye conditions, minor eye surgery, and educational seminars for more than 5,000 patients, an average of 40 patients a day, in 30 communities spanning approximately 5,000 miles.
For Mrs. Kathleen Sauvé and her daughter, visiting the Eye Van turned out to be more than good vision health. In her letter to Eye Van physician, Dr. Steve Arshinoff, MD, FRCSC, Mrs. Sauvé wrote,
“As you are aware, you attended to my daughter who had been very sick for two years. Being very upset and not knowing who to turn to, I decided to have her examined at the CNIB Eye Van. As you know, you diagnosed that she had a brain tumour and sent us to Toronto for an operation. I want to express my gratitude for the important part that you and the CNIB Eye Van had in saving my daughter’s life.”
The Eye Van’s success can be attributed to the strength of its partnerships with many community groups, corporations and individuals. While the Eye Van receives 65% of its operating funding from the Ontario health ministry, CNIB must raise $150,000 annually to run the program.
We desperately need support from the Aviva Community Fund to ensure the Eye Van continues to provide quality health care to the people who need it the most. Times are tough, and raising funds has become extremely challenging while operating costs, like fuel, are increasing. $100,000 from the Aviva Community Fund will have a significant impact on our ability to achieve our goals to upgrade our unit and diagnostic equipment. We want to ensure that people who may not be able to travel to an urban centre can still see a vision health professional and receive quality, state-of the-art vision health care in their own community.
CNIB is a nationwide, community-based, registered charity committed to research, public education and vision health for all Canadians. CNIB’s Mission is to enhance independence for people with vision loss and to be the leader in promoting vision health.

I have seen the devastation in people's lives when they unnecessarily lose their sight. Eye care must reach all Canadians.

I know this is a great programme. Our community of COchrane receives so many benefits from the CNIB and appreciate having them travel the Northern Route each year. Monique does a terrific job in ensuring everything is up to spect and in good working order.

I have been working as a nurse on the CNIB Eye Van for 7 years now and I can tell you how vitally important this program is to the northern communities we serve. Over 5000 people per year benefit from having an eye specialist come directly to their community. I have seen life changing occurances happen over the years and many times vision was saved because of our interventions. Please support this submission and make it happen. So many people of the north depend on this vital service! It is absolutely terrific and I am so proud to be a part of it!!

I travelled on the Eye Van for 2 years, and saw many many people helped who otherwise would not have had access to eye care. I took two years away from my family and my husband because I felt (and still feel) that this is an invaluable service in the north. Never has a program been more worthy of funding. Just because you're receiving eye care in a transport trailer doesn't mean it can't be state of the art and cutting edge!! Go Monique!

I had the opportunity to work with Monique and her staff in many of the communities in Northern Ontario, providing eye care to areas not serviced by an ophthalmologist. The organization and level of eye care provided is always exemplary with up to date laser and surgical instruments. Lasers are expensive but provide expert care to patients in remote areas making the ultimate cost more reasonable. In all my years of practice, there were no patients more appreciative of the care received from the staff on the CNIB Eye Van. The Aviva Community Fund would find a welcome recipient in the Eye Van filtering through to the many less fortunate isolated communities in the North.

My husband has been registered with CNIB since October 1981. We moved to Elliot Lake from Ottawa in 2004. While my husband does not at this time require the services of the Eye Van as he has an opthalmologist who comes here on a regular basis, it is great to know that, should the day come, when he no longer has access to a visiting opthalmologist, he would be able to avail himself of its services.

This programme helps the people of the North who are not able to access an ophthalmologist otherwise. It provides eyecare and often basic advice in places where there is not a regular physician.

The service provided for the poeple of Northern Ontario is the best dollar spend in any infrastructure program. The cost of the whole program compare to the delivery receive by the poeple of the region does not compare to anything else. Many program deliver and are badly needed for us but the cost is humongous compare to the Eye van service by CNIB. It is well run and effective in all aspect.

Thanks to the Eye Van my mother was able to have an appointment with a specialized doctor without having to make an eight hour trip down south for the same type of service. As my wife and I have been comnnected to this valuable service for at least the last ten years is one way or another we have seen the great work that this service provides . The staff and doctors over the years have become friends as well as service providers and this can never be forgotten . All of those who have served on the van must be commended for giving up a part of their family life to ensure that the Northerners may receivce the same service that is available in Southern Ontario .Good luck Monique , Sandra and all attached to the EYE VAN .
