Overview:

The Mighty Pen is a project run by Tempus International, a registered Canadian charity founded in 2003, which facilitates the annual writing competition ("The Mighty Pen") for youth from 30 rural regions across Nepal. The Mighty Pen is now in the process of expanding "The Mighty Pen"program to Canada. We are very interested in working with Canada's indigenous communities to promote education, literacy and connection to their local culture. We aim to do this through adapting our present program structure in Nepal to various communities here in Canada. Taking advantage of some of the wonderful educational tools available to us here in Canada we would aim to not only engage indigenous youth in literacy, but also to create podcasts, as well as educational films. In Nepal our program seeks to address the low levels of literacy, and the lack of children’s literature in Nepal. Contest participants write short stories to be published into Nepalese children’s books. From the thousands of submitted written entries, a panel of community leaders selects the eighteen exceptional winners (nine girls and nine boys from three different age categories). The winners are then invited to attend The Mighty Pen’s award ceremony in Kathmandu with all of their travel expenses covered by Tempus International, who also awards the students a tuition scholarship to support their continued pursuit of education. In a final testament to their achievement, the student’s combined works are published into children’s books, which will help grow the children’s literature sections in the libraries and schools across Nepal, with over 2,000 copies being distributed to the rural regions when the program is run. Your support to our Mighty Pen Project through the Aviva Community Fund would allow us to finance our program expansion to Canada, and help promote both children's literacy and indigenous languages.
