Description

On May 19, 2015, the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development announced that it would invest $21.6M to build a new Kindergarten to Grade 5 school in West Saint John. This is the first new school in Saint John in 40 years and the only Early French Immersion school on the west side of Saint John. Seaside Park Elementary School opened in September of 2017 for 475 students. Seaside Park Elementary School has replaced St. Patrick's, Havelock and Seawood Schools. Our new school is a three storey building with a cafeteria, gym, music room, performing arts room, library, multi-purpose community room, as well as 23 classrooms.

Plans are underway to build a new children's playground on the site of our new school. A working committee has been created to undertake this project. The committee feels that a new playground will benefit the students of the school as well as the children and families in our community. It has been widely recognized that this area of the city is long overdue for adequate recreational facilities to promote healthy and active living amongst our young people. Within the area of our school community, there are 1,177 children ages 14 years and younger. This playground will be accessible to all of them.

The educational components we are addressing are to create a playground that is accessible for all children, including children with physical and social challenges. This would allow all students to participate in outdoor physical education classes, promoting gross motor development, providing sensory learning in a unique and engaging way while encouraging age appropriate learning.

This has been a year of transition for many as we said good-bye to three schools and welcomed the adventures that our new school holds.  We have embraced the challenges, continue to learn lessons, and see our children not only ready to learn, but also creating friendships and cheering on their classmates at their new school.  It is our dedicated teaching and administrative staff, committed parent and community volunteers and engaged students that embody the Seaside Park Elementary vision of “Stronger Together”.   A new playground is our next step and we are confident that this will have a positive community impact for many years to come.

We are grateful to the Aviva Community Fund for providing the opportunity to share our story and qualify for funds necessary to build the playground.  To our school, community, Saint John and all of our friends, we are very excited to have you involved.  Thank-you for every vote that you cast for our playground.  Your support is truly appreciated.

See you on the playground!
