Community Health

Funding level: $50,000 to $100,000

For the people today and tomorrow, for better care and great health! Healthy living, an active life style, eating well, rest and leading a stress free life is something we all strive for. The Physician Health Team at our hospital work hard at keeping the community healthy through regular check ups and screening.
Our hospital dedicates their time to educate, train, mentor, and hire professionals.

Our hospitals biggest challenge is keeping our equipment up-to-date, the funding is not available, so we rely on fund raising and donations to help us replace our old equipment.

Environment issues and energy inefficiency is an issue in our Radiology Department of the hospital. Older equipment , more radiation, less efficiency.

Our current x-ray machine is a CR (computed Radiography) general x-ray unit. We still use cassettes and screens (imaging plate) inside. We place the cassette under the body part of the area to be examined and then the x-ray exposure is made. Once the x-ray taken the cassette with the screen inside (imaging plate) is then put through a special laser scanner, or CR reader that reads the screen (imaging plate) and digitizes the image. Images from the screens are initially analog when the x-ray is taken than then converted to a digital image from the CR reader. The digital image can then be reviewed and enhanced using computer software that can manipulate contrast, brightness, filtration, zoom, annotation and provide tools such as measurement and volume.
Our current processing equipment is basically obsolete - as parts are NO longer generated from these reader units.
Our goal is to purchase a unit that has DR capabilities. This piece of equipment is the Digital Radiography and is the mainstream for many diagnostic imaging departments TODAY!
The advantage to the new x-ray machine will include time efficiency through by passing processing step and the ability to digitally transfer and enhance images. Also, LESS RADIATION, can be used to produce an image of similar contrast to CR imaging or conventional radiography.

Instead of X-ray film or CR screens, digital radiography uses a digital image capture device. This gives advantages of immediate image preview and availability; a wider dynamic range which makes it more forgiving for over and under exposure (less repeat exams, less stress on the patient); as well as the ability to apply special image processing techniques that enhance overall display quality of the image.

We currently have 2 units, one portable and one stationary, both are 17 years old and both units became operational in June 2000. As it stands now, if parts break down, they can not be replaced! The companies no longer have these parts available. We have an old portable unit donated to us that we are able to use parts off of.

The environment and our health go hand in hand. Radiation reduction is important, energy reduction is important, these are factors that would help environmentally if our equipment was replaced with less radioactive equipment, reducing the health dangers from radiation.

We have been fund raising for a new X-ray unit for the past year. The cost of a new unit is $250,000.00. We have raised approximately $68,764.00, through continued fund raising activities.
