Community Development

Funding level: $50,000 to $100,000

Growing up in poverty can leave children with numerous disadvantages compared to their peers in daily life, their education and their futures. Children living in poverty may not have access to the resources they need to know that they are safe, healthy and supported. When children don't feel this sense of security, they are less able to enjoy life and concentrate on their education.

Shania Kids Can and the Rotary Club of St. Catharines are committed to creating equal opportunity for all students. We believe that a child living in poverty should not suffer socially, emotionally or intellectually because they don't have access to a healthy meal, or a warm jacket in the winter. We understand that poverty and inequities may not always be obvious, and children who are suffering silently are in need of support too. We need your support to help these students break out of the cycle of poverty that can limit the potential that each of these students has.

Shania Kids Can and the Rotary Club of St. Catharines South are working together to open a Shania Kids Can Clubhouse in a District School Board of Niagara school. The Clubhouse is a safe space for children to hangout, where they can receive the support and resources they need to thrive during their childhood years in order to fulfill their full potential. At the Clubhouse, students can participate in a number of programs designed to support their social, emotional and intellectual development. A full-time staff member at the Clubhouse works with the students to ensure their needs are met, and they always have a caring, supportive adult who they know is there to talk to when times are tough. The Clubhouse creates an environment where students can develop a strong sense of self-worth, and transform into strong, future leaders.

This program works. 7 Clubhouses are running in Canada and the United States, and the schools have seen incredible results. The students participating in Shania Kids Can Clubhouses have better academic achievement, decreased stress, and higher levels of satisfaction with school. The students have fewer distressing experiences, with hunger being eliminating in many cases.

We all know it takes a village to raise a child. The Rotary Club of St. Catharines South wants to prove what can be done when the community rallies around children in need. This funding will help cover the costs associated with running a Clubhouse in a Niagara school. Please vote to help children living in poverty to rise above their circumstances, in order to achieve their full potential.
