Hill of Dreams
Created October 21, 2010 by Jodi Butcher
South Ridge Public School is the 2nd largest Public School located in a small town of just 15,000 residents. We currently have 414 students from grades JK-6. A large percentage of our students are bused in from surrounding rural areas.
We need playground equipment for our primary students!!
The current play area for our Primary Students (JK - Grade 2) consists of a large bare hill, concrete pad and a sand box. Our Primary students have no playground structure of their own available to explore on. This equipment will be used by 182 primary students. Our school is in a densely populated neighbourhood full of young families and sits adjacent to a large housing co-op – all of whom will benefit from this playground equipment.
Because of a generous donation from our Tillsonburg Lioness Club and the dedicated hard work that our Parent Council and surrounding community have contributed towards this project, we have been able to currently raise $10,000 of the roughly $23,000 our project needs.
We believe that in our small community many families are experiencing economic stress which limits our ability to fundraise substantial amounts of money necessary to achieve our goal.
Since 2009 to early 2010 we have been busy gathering quotes for a primary play structure. We narrowed down the search to 3 quotes and chose a company we would like to work with. We chose this company based on customer service, play value of their structure and the positive feedback from their references. The quote we are looking at is a 3 platform unit with deck heights 4 and 5' to allow play value below decks as well as shade for the primary age group. The quote we obtained includes labour, wood border and pea gravel surfacing. Total cost $ 22,718.23. Plus $300 for a 3rd party playground inspection required by the school board once completed.
This project will be successfully completed quickly with the Aviva Community fund Grant monies as we are SET TO GO once funding in hand!
We have been working overtime to gather community support for our efforts to win funding from the Aviva Community Fund Grant!! We have reached out to our local community by doing live radio interviews (Morning show with Craig Fox on Country 107.3), we had a write-up on the Thames Valley District Board of Ed school website and even made FRONT PAGE of our local newspaper! We have been in our local school newsletter and council newsletter trying to spread the word and gather support! We had a large banner carried by our students in the Town of Tillsonburg annual Santa Clause parade! Several local businesses have changed their exterior sign boards to promote our efforts…we are truly pulling together as a small community!
We ask Aviva to award the South Ridge Public School HILL OF DREAMS the $13,000 we require to complete our project. In doing so, this would allow others to benefit in the smaller “Under $25k” category as well by leaving $12,000 available to help other great ideas!
Outdoor play is so vital to our children’s overall well being and health. A play structure could help develop their large motor skills, cultivate positive social interactions, initiate imaginative play and allow children to just have a fun, healthy active break in the day.
AVIVA - please help us turn our vacant hill into an area full of laughter and imaginative play. Outdoor active play is so very important in our children’s lives - help us make this a reality!
