Overview

Asphalt to Oasis: Creating permanent change in the Community and St. Anthony School yard –A change that positively impacts our entire community.

PLAN: Potentially, we can depave up to 10,000  square feet, considering that  fire truck/vehicular access must be considered.  The soil under the paving is not bad, it just needs to be enlivened by worms and compost.  We would also develop a plan for replanting the yard with local species that will grow well in the area and provide more shade for the students.   The plan will also include the construction of an outdoor classroom in the part of the yard that does have trees right now.  We will also add play structures that allow a greater variety of recreational opportunities for students.

Is it well budgeted?
The cost would be up to about $100,000 for such an endeavour if done properly by professional contractors (based on a rate of $4000 per 400sq. ft.). Costs include cutting up pavement, removing 18" of the paving and surface soil, hauling away the debris ( 900 cubic yards), and adding quality soil-compost mix. Removal of10,000 sq. ft. of pavement - probably the maximum that can be depaved, would cost under $50,000. Depave.com of course could do the work pro-bono, though they do not have the capacity to do the entire grounds, more likely under a 1000 square feet.   We would also factor in a planting budget of $10,000.  This is the cost for depaving the entire yard.  We will modify the amount of ground to be depaved and replanted based on the amount of the grant.

Is it going to be well underway by 2015?
Yes, we would start immediately once the grant is secured so that depaving could begin in the Spring of 2015.  The outdoor classroom would be constructed in May 2015.  The planting and construction of play structures will be dependent on how quickly the pavement can be removed.   The plans have already been developed based on three separate consultations with our students.  These plans are available on our Aviva page.

Will it benefit many?
Yes!  It will directly benefit the 140 students of St. Anthony School.  It will also make a significant difference to the community creating a creative growing space in a lower income urban environment.   Our school is a hub for the community.  It is also open to the Chinese community that uses the entire school facility on Saturdays, the Dalhousie Day Care that operates in the basement of the building, and the YMCA who run an after-school program during the week.  We are also in the process of connecting to other community groups and organizations to offer them space in our building.  All of these groups can benefit from our new naturalized school yard and they will have full access to this area.

All ideas must be associated with a registered charity.   We are associated with the Ottawa Catholic School Board Charitable Registration Number: 869963967 RR0001

Is it Canadian?
Yes, 100% Canadian – all work will be done by Canadian designers, contractors and volunteers.
We are also supported by two local Aviva brokers, their information is on our Aviva page

St. Anthony is a small school in the heart of Little Italy here in Ottawa.  We serve an active and vibrant immigrant community from Asia and Latin America.
We have a very small yard that is mostly concrete.  Our kids want grass.  They want to play in a yard that allows them to run free.

We have partnered with Evergreen - http://www.evergreen.ca/ who will help us develop a plan for our yard.  The plan will be based on what the students would like to see in their yard.
What we really want to do is remove the asphalt in our yard.  The hard, cracked surface hurts our students every time they fall and it limits their ability to run and play.
St. Anthony is a very old school - yards used to be paved over entirely, just like ours.
We have some trees that were planted 15 years ago as part of one of the first greening projects in Ottawa.  Our objective now is to complete the job.
We want to create a yard for our kids and for our community - something that will be an oasis in the inner city of Ottawa.
