Overview:

Outdoor play is one of the things that characterizes childhood.  The playground experience is an essential component to academic learning. Outdoor play allows children to "let off steam", and to recharge.  It is the time of day when children's play can flourish, engaging in very different types of play and interaction with peers, something that cannot always be provided in the classroom.Winger school is filled with dedicated staff, supportive parents, and some of the best, most creative and energetic student minds that any school could hope for.  We are, however a small school in a rural community with few community partners that are within a close proximity. A few years ago, the school's playground was deemed ‘no longer safe’, and had to be removed.  The children at our school have been without an accessible play structure for years.  To help compensate for this, we do our best to offer as many ‘off site’ experiences as possible; staff and parent volunteers organize recess games and activities at every given opportunity; and our community donates their own supplies and equipment for children to use during recesses.  These efforts have helped to give our students the kinds of experiences we want for them, but they are costly, time consuming and cannot be economically and practically sustained forever.   A group of tireless members of our Winger Community have worked incredibly hard for the past three years to raise funds for a play-structure.  Although they have been resourceful and the community has been very generous, we have only raised enough to keep a piece of our old equipment up to code, and to build a small climbing structure for the smallest children in our school.  We have built connections with community partners, the town council, local businesses, and received support from the School Board and the Superintendant, however we are still miles from our goal.  Without outside help, we cannot expect to raise the kinds of funding necessary to build an accessible play structure that supports the needs of all children in our school. We have a dream at Winger school!  Our dream is that through the continued generosity of our school and local community, and through the assistance of the Aviva Community Fund that we could build a play structure that meets the needs of our entire community.  That all students, despite their age or challenges they may face can feel included when they play with their friends and feel supported by their school. With your help, we hope to see this dream come to life.  We, and our students need your help to accomplish this task. We hope that you will support us!
