Between 100 - 1,000
Overview:Mission Statement: Providing tangible, compassionate assistance and care to those in the Guelph community through immediate relief and ongoing support with the goal of a greater level of independence.
Description of the charity: In Guelph, one in 10 children live below the poverty line and food bank usage has increased by 28% in the last four years. Initially started at Lakeside Church, an ever increasing need for poverty relief lead to the purchase of Norfolk United Church and the separation of Lakeside Church and Lakeside HOPE House, an independent non-profit initiative. HOPE House offers tangible support in the form of a Food Market, a clothing cupboard, a backpack program, Christmas hampers and more to any Guelph resident living in poverty. Serving more than 155 client visits a month from our Food Market alone, HOPE House already has long standing relationships with families in need.
HOPE House Food Market is an established pantry in Guelph providing food, hygiene and cleaning products, fruits, vegetables and other necessary items to those living in poverty in our city. The move to our new facility introduced change to our traditional Food Pantry Program. The HOPE House Food Market offers clients choice through a points based system as a pose to pre-packed hampers at traditional food pantries. Each item in the Food Market is assigned a point value and each family in need is assigned a specific number of points to shop with based on the number of people in their family. Under the direction of Associate Director JP Valeriote, volunteers have been trained to accompany clients of all literacy levels through the Food Market building relationships and participating in social mentor-ship. Volunteers help to tally client points and encourage them to think about the needs of their family while also making choices as to what their family prefers to eat. We believe choice is imperative to our clients self-esteem and empowering them to reach a greater level of independence. The number of clients has more than doubled in the last year with 52 visits in June 2011 compared to 121 visits in June 2012. We have also seen a huge increase since opening our doors downtown as our location has made us much more accessible in the community. HOPE House is accessible by public transit and is close to other services clients may need to access while out.
Use of Funding: Lakeside HOPE House is requesting funding for a new initiative called Edu-Kitchen Recipe of the Month. The goal of this program is to provide Food Market clients with both the practical and physical tools needed to make nutritious meals for their family. This program will use experiential learning to provide skills to our clients and will also provide them with the food needed to replicate their learned meal at home for their family. The specific ingredients in the meal prepared will only be available to those who participate in the Recipe of the Month group therefore creating an incentive for families to participate. Voluntary participation in this program by our Food Market clients, will give them a sense of pride for taking the initiative to learn new skills and prepare a meal for their family. It is our desire that the boost in their confidence from this program will carry many rewards in their everyday life.
In order to run this program HOPE House needs to purchase and install an exhaust hood and fire suppression hood to bring our Edu-Kitchen meet fire code regulations. The kitchen space is large and well lit, perfect for cooking classes once it meets safety regulations. Please help us, help families in our community.
