Build a no-kill shelter/sanctuary for domestic house rabbits
Running Rabbit Farm Rabbit Rescue Sanctuary
September 24, 2012
More than 1,000
Overview:Rabbits are the 3rd most popular pet next to cats and dogs, yet they are the most misunderstood. Many rabbits are purchased on impulse at Easter every year, and, when the novelty wears off, are placed in already overcrowded shelters or dumped in forests or on the street where only a lucky few will survive. We plan to offer a better option - a permanent place where these rabbits will be given a loving environment until forever homes are found and sanctuary for however long is needed - be it for only a few days or for the rest of their lives.
The rabbits will be provided with necessary veterinary care, proper housing, nutrition, socialization, and of course, spays and neuters. ( An unspayed rabbit can have a litter every 28-31 days with 2-12 kits in each litter!) The creation of an educational area filled with printed materials and seminar rooms will enable us to provide the necessary information the public requires in order to become (or continue to be) responsible rabbit owners. Veterinary students will be encouraged to visit the shelter, to study and learn, as we need more rabbit savvy veterinarians.
The rabbits are currently housed in foster homes, of which there are few, and the building of a shelter will enable us to care for the ever increasing numbers of animals that need help. We will then be able to hold regular viewing hours and visitations, thereby increasing the number of adoptions.
We had to turn away over 20 rabbits last Christmas as space was not available. Our goal is to open the largest sanctuary for rabbits in Canada.Help us to help the rabbits so we never have to turn away a rabbit in need ever again.
