OverviewOur idea is to bring sailing to youth throughout the South Shore of Nova Scotia! We are aiming to have over 1000 kids from schools in the South Shore Region travel to their local yacht clubs to experience the beautiful ocean they live next to, through sailing. Sail All would coordinate with existing Learn-to-Sail programs near the schools to provide instructors and equipment at no charge to the students.
Funding from Aviva would finance the purchase of PFDs and sailing gear required for the kids to participate in sailing, and if they choose, for those in financial need to continue sailing throughout the summer! It would also help cover the cost of educational aids needed to effectively teach the kids the basics of sailing, and other costs associated with the program.
The idea has been tested as a pilot program at Lunenburg Yacht Club (LYC) in Nova Scotia with great success! This past spring, we had 251 students from local schools go out sailing for a day with the instructors from LYC. We currently have other sailing clubs interested, and would like to expand the program to other regions on the South Shore, with the help of Aviva funding.
Nova Scotia, and particularly the South Shore, have a long history in sailing - the Bluenose calls Lunenburg home - yet very few youth get the opportunity to try sailing. Sailing teaches teamwork, cooperation, and a lifelong sport that is environmentally friendly, while providing healthy, outdoor activity! Sailing also provides educational enrichment for students, as it can be tied to history, science, math and health curricula.
