Sexual Assault Domestic Violence Monument
Created November 18, 2012 by Melanie Mills
I want to build a
monument to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
We are a group of survivors of violence against women and we
are working together to gather the resources necessary to build a monument to
commemorate women who have been murdered by their partners in Lanark
County. We have joined our vision with
the vision of two artists, also women from Lanark County, who will sculpt a
beautiful and meaningful message from limestone. Not only will this art serve as a memorial to
the women who were murdered, it will also serve as a constant reminder of the
many women who live with the horrors of violence on a daily basis.
The monument is still more.
It will serve as a gathering place for rallies, a meeting place when
women come together. The monument will
stand silent vigil as we meditate and remember, it will celebrate our victories
with us and solidly hold our place until our return.
Most important of all, this particular piece of art will
stand in defiance to remind all people everyone needs to be a part of the
solution so no more names, not even one, is added to the list of the murdered
