OverviewStorytellers can broaden our minds: engage, provoke, inspire, and ultimately, connect us.”
Robert Redford (Sundance Film Festival)
Knowingly or unknowingly, we all hunger for meaning, purpose, and ultimately relationship. We all want to belong and experience human connection. We desire authentic community. We all want to belong and experience human connection. We desire authentic community. On behalf of my neighborhood community association, I am therefore asking for funding to host a film festival designed to connect, engage, provoke, inspire and create connections --connections here both in our local neighborhood in Aylmer Quebec, and the larger Ottawa/Gatineau community which we are a part of, and ultimately connection with the world beyond.
To this end, Connections 2013 will feature films depicting life around the world --films that that promote values such as empathy, solidarity, integrity, global citizenship and unconditional love. Our self-funded first film festival in 2012 had local film-makers preview their films in the idyllic setting of the Ottawa River shore-line and in so doing nurture connection within our local community and the larger human community that we are all a part of. Though small, the festival was a great success. By expanding the scope, audience and variety of films that participated in our first neighbourhood film festival, Connections 2013 will endeavor to reach out beyond our own neighbourhood and inspire many more people throughout the Ottawa Gatineau community.
The festival will take place in August 2013 and include venues both outdoor and indoor. In addition to films, the festival will also include fitness workshops, drama, slam poetry, food, and music thus encouraging connection with ourselves as well as connection with others. Connections 2013 will therefore do more than just show films, but also endeavor to create a holistic interactive experience for all participants.
The festival will enjoy the involvement of many volunteers ensuring that it will be well organized. It will also draw in a wide range of participants including local Government leaders, local businesses, and professionals involved in the film industry. But most important it will provide an event that will draw in people from the community and inspire and challenge them to create a more compassionate and connected world.
"At this stage of history either one of two things is possible. Either the general population will take control of its own destiny and will concern itself with community interests, guided by values of solidarity, sympathy and concern for others, or alternatively there will be no destiny for anyone to control."
- Noam Chomsky
