Welcoming New Canadians to Our Community
Created September 26, 2011 by Susanne Derejko
In my community we have many new Canadians coming to fill job positions. Often they arrive with little more than a suitcase of clothes and a heart full of hope. They have no schools for their children, no doctor, no dentist. They often have temporary housing, and are looking for a home to move to. Transportation is often an obstacle to many opportunities. They are in cultural shock and they are homesick. They often do not speak the language and ESL classes are not easily available to them.
Despite the smiles and the huge hope they carry for their future here, life is overwhelming.I would like to have centre set up so they have a place to go to .A place where someone can assist them in acquiring the basic necessities as well as introducing them to new friends and neighbours. Help them en-roll in ESL classes, and learn how to get around the neighbourhood and access the services here that available to them .
As I do much of this already, I need a way to let the people know who I am, where I am and what I can help them with.Opening up a centre in my city would be such a wonderful opportunity for them, myself and everyone in our community .
I know that Edmonton has this service for their new Canadians ,but the people in my city do not have the means to get to the "big" city.Often they work 2 or 3 jobs. A 2 hour bus ride is not an easy task for them ....and besides, the community they live in is here...the doctors and dentists, the schools, the sports teams for their children .It is all here in my city , in their new city....they need to be able to find their way around here, in Sherwood park, their new home....lets make this happen ....please!!!!
