Competition Rules
Here's everything you need to know to qualify for entering your idea in the Aviva Community Fund competition.
How does an idea qualify?
We're looking for ideas that will address a specific need in your community, and have a positive impact. There are certain aspects we'll consider to see whether an idea qualifies for the Aviva Community Fund competition. Ask yourself these questions:
- IS MY IDEA ACTION-ORIENTED? The idea should "create," "make," "change," "purchase," or otherwise be carried out for the greater good of the community. We prefer stand-alone projects as opposed to those that will require annual funding.
- IS MY IDEA WITHIN REASON? Your idea should be able to be fulfilled using a reasonable portion of the Aviva Community Fund, which totals $500,000. We're going to fund a minimum of one Small idea (under $10,000), one Medium Idea ($10,000 - $50,000), and one Big Idea ($50,000 - $250,000), so don't feel you need to hold back.
- IS MY IDEA SELF-CONTAINED AND CAN IT BE COMPLETED IN A SET TIMEFRAME? Idea entries should be self-contained, meaning they don't require that funds will be pooled (for example, partially funding research on a particular health issue) and can be completed or in place before December 31st, 2010. While we like ongoing programs, the nature of the competition means that we will only able to provide funding for one year(the funding required for initial set-up) after which funding may no longer be available. So preference in the Judging phase will be given to stand-alone projects unless there is a feasible plan to obtain ongoing funding from other sources.
- DOES MY IDEA TAKE PLACE IN CANADA? Because this is about local Canadian communities, we will only be funding ideas that will be implemented within Canada.
What are the eligibility criteria?
In addition to the above, to be eligible for consideration in the Aviva Community Fund, we'll need your idea entry to meet the following requirements:
- Your idea should result in a change that positively impacts your community.
- Your idea has to take place within Canada, and should not require access to private property in order to be implemented (though public or municipal properties or ideas that benefit an organization are OK.).
- Your idea should be realistic to implement using $250,000 or less.
- Your idea should be realistically implemented by December 31st, 2010.
- Your idea should be submitted in one of Canada's two official languages (English or French).
- Your idea has to take place within Canada.
- Your idea can't include any mention of any specific individual, company, brands, or products. (Our goal is to avoid transparent attempts to exploit this website for commercial purposes. Mentioning either your affiliation to an idea, or an idea beneficiary, like a school, not-for-profit, charitable or similar organization, is fine by us. However, Aviva reserves the sole right to remove any images or media, or moderate an idea, that, in its sole discretion, represents promotion that goes against the spirit of the competition.)
- Your idea can't contain any trademarks or other material owned by a third party without the express written permission of that third party.
- Your idea can't contain any offensive, obscene, or sexually suggestive material, propaganda, potentially misleading information, or defamatory or disparaging material about other people or companies, or endorse any form of hate or hate group or terrorist activity.
- The outcome of your idea can't result in discrimination on the basis of gender, race, religion, creed, national origin, disability, handicap, age, sexual orientation, or any other basis prohibited by law, as determined in the sole discretion of Aviva.
- Your idea can't support any particular political party or affiliated group.
- Your idea can't directly promote or speak negatively about any particular faith, political action, legislation or party, or promote or encourage the violation of any law, as determined in the sole discretion of Aviva.
- Your idea can't promote any activities that may appear unsafe or dangerous, as determined in the sole discretion of Aviva.
- Your idea can't relate to controversial subject matter or any subject that is contrary to the interests of Aviva, as determined in the sole discretion of Aviva.
- You're welcome to submit an idea on behalf of an organization you're affiliated with, and, subject to meeting our due diligence criteria, your organization could be selected to receive the RFP for fulfillment to implement the idea, if it is a winning idea. (Learn more about fulfillment)
- If your idea involves the implementation of a program that requires ongoing funding, we can only guarantee one year of funding.
- An idea that does not meet the eligibility criteria above will not be posted.
An idea that doesn't meet the eligibility criteria above unfortunately won't qualify for funding. If Aviva determines an idea doesn't meet eligibility criteria prior to the semi-final or judging phases, the idea will be eliminated from competing in those rounds of the competition.
