Mobile Devices in the Classroom

We would like to introduce high school students to using mobile technology as an educational tool.

Many students don't think of mobile devices as pocket computers. They see these devices as having a few key features that they use (such as a music player) on a regular basis. We would like to teach students how to use mobile devices as organizational tools and to learn how to install educational applications that can provide both enrichment activities and extra practice for those students who are struggling with some of the content.

In addition to consuming content we would like students to be able to create content right from the classroom. Using a mobile device, students could create blogs, podcasts, wikis as well as online communities.

The goal of the project would be to make teaching and learning more interactive, more current and more exciting for students. We want to prepare students for life-long and life-wide learning.

Our project would require the purchase 2 class sets of mobile devices along with the required accessories for use in a classroom situation. We feel that this will help bring learning into the 21st century.

  this is stupid, what are you going to do, buy EVERY student an iphone, im going to tell you now, the only mobile tools useful to education are VERY expensive, and even if you tech every student about the usefullness of these devices, keep in mind,this is in TRENTON, quite a poor town, so parents arn't going to fork out $500 to buy an electronic device when they can barely afford food

  flamclam, Education and technology need to be accessible to all students regardless of their socio-economic background. The goal of this project is not to have students purchase devices. I don't think that any teacher would expect that in any class no matter what city they were teaching in. The goal of the project is to provide ACCESS to the technology for all students. This is why we are proposing purchasing class sets of devices that can be used by all students in class.

  Trenton is not a poor town, and im pretty sure people can and do afford food. The purpose of this project to is to perhaps allow those who do not have the extra money for these devices to still gain a knowledge of what they are and what they have the capability of doing. Classrooms in the 21st century are full of technology and integrating it into the daily lesson plan would help the learning significantly. This is an awsome idea. I think that cell phone use, i-pod use and laptop use has significantly changed even since i was in high school, 5 years ago, and even I find it hard to pick up a new piece of technology and learn about it. Not only are they going to have the ability to use these for their school work, but you dont realize how much they will learn about our world just by being given the chance to pick it up be able to use it in general. The students would be learning in so many ways. THIS IS AN AWSOME IDEA. Bringing modern technology to the classroom is amazing, great idea!!!

  I think this is a pretty good idea for the most part, but I dont think the school is aware of how risky this is...and that people just might end up stealing the Ipods...But i guess if they dont, then this would probably be a good idea...why not give it a shot.

  I think this is a great idea! Yes, Trenton in general has a bad reputation. However, the teachers at THS are amazing people and with ideas like this, are trying to implement change for the better. The teachers, Mr. Lanovaz included, have never given up on their students and always strive to make brighter futures for ALL of their students. It's not a students fault what socioeconomic background they come from, so if experience to technology in the classroom is the only opportunity they have then that's one more learning experience the student has gained. Of course there's concern about theft, but that can be solved by numbering each iPod in the class set and ensuring that they are all returned by the end of class. I think this is a great project and has potential to help inspire and engage the youth of THS. Good luck!

  ipod touch's r a good idea i guess, but we shouldnt be purchasing them to use in classes.. like ya kids are gunna steal them.. lots of people have their own anyway, and idk how there r good educational purpose's outta it.. like all there is to use that would help with school is the calculator feature. to get other educational things on it.. you'd need to get apps... and most of the good ones cost money. and you need wifi to download them which our school doesnt have.. but we should have wifi.. like facccck.

  As much as it IS a good idea, where do you think we'll get the money from? Yes we CAN fund raise the crap out of this to get them. BUT this is something for most of the grade 9's and 10's to look forward to. Seeing as most of us (grades 11 and 12) will probably be out of school in the work force or something by the time we raise the required amount of money. And even then it's iffy. iTouch's run for about $300 on the market, times that by the amount of students we have. It runs up to ALOT more than 10-50-thousand, I've done the math, the price for every student to have an iTouch is about 450-thousand dollars. Sorry to burst your bubbles people, but this is too much of an egregious endeavour. Something maybe the current 7th graders can look forward to....

  I think this is a great idea. More businesses and organizations are using these forms of technologies now (ipods, Blackberry, facebook, blogs, etc) and are incorporating or creating jobs around maintaining them, including mine. Having experience in the use of these outlets is very beneficial and will be a necessity for many jobs in the next few years. Great idea Lanovs!

  Coming from an retired tiger i'm glad to hear that Lanovaz finally went through with the idea that he talked about all last year. For everyone that doesn't understand what you use them for, i can explain a little, we use stuff similar to that at university, where it allows the teachers to post questions on the front screen, and everyone can answer to see if people understand the material. I also think that Lanovaz has done the math right, he isnt talking about buying for each person in the entire school, get each class a set of thirty (or so) and when the kids come in, they borrow it for that class, then no one leaves til they return them all, so nothing gets stolen. Kids can also get lesson outlines and different stuff on their iphone, so it can become a great educational tool! 110% support, i wish you luck T.H.S.

  This is a great idea, with a few of caveats... There needs to be a tight level of control on the devices (who gets them, when they get them, where they can use them) to prevent them from walking or being broken. I think RugbyPacker has the right idea there. It's a fantastic idea to integrate new technologies into the classroom, but I hope it's not at the expense of real person to person communication (IE. instant messaging/texting that everyone seems to rather do than actually TALK) or actually writing rather than typing. Those are still valuable skills to have. Overall, assuming my caveats are met (ha ha), I would support this program in theory. I would like to see the theory become fact and help improve the overall level of education.

  I think that this idea should be more towards some less rich people. I think that this idea should be expanded to all classrooms. My elementry school had laptops that EVERYONE used including teachers to grade 1 students. It wasn't very nice sharing them because they were broken in the matter of days. there may be back fires in the idea you asking the money for. I think yes you could buy your own but that is too expensive, and as TashaAndress said half the kids in your school own iPod touches. so is it necessary for everyone to own one. and are they out for lending and can you download music to it? or is only educational use?

  Lanovaz was a great teacher back in the day. I wish we had the chance to play with this kind of stuff back when I was at THS. I like the idea, but it has some flaws. What happens when not all are returned at the end of the semester? Knowing the youth of Trenton, I'm sure some will go "missing" (either lost or stolen), or be damaged beyond repair.

  For all those who don't really understand what this would do for our schools, think about it, all the applications that we have, they can be incorporated into our schools and the curriculum. Think about how crappy our reading books in English class are, with the Ipod, you have a reading application and you can buy books to put on them. The electronic book would last for decades and we wouldn't have to worry about loosing a chapter because the spine has been so over bent that it is falling apart. For math class, you can use not only the calculator but probably a graphic calculator and trigonometry formulas etc on it. For the subjects that there are yet to be applications for, people can make them. We have enough technology in the 21st century to do it, and to make it happen. We need to modernize our schools, and the Ipod in classrooms is the perfect bridge to make it happen.

  I think it's really unfortunate how many people have commented with things completely unrelated to the topic at hand. Anyway, to the subject! I used to go to THS and having now completed teacher's college and experienced the use of technologies like iPods in the classroom, I can say that it is indeed a fantastic idea to use these tools for educational purposes. It would really depend on how you were looking to use them, because I really don't think using them for "lending and [downloading] music" has much educational merit.   Wonderful idea - students (and everyone else) really must keep up with modern technologies to survive in our new modern world. It wasn't so long ago that the internet was new and many people (poor or not) didn't have home computers. Now where would all of these kids be able to post their comments (however irrelevant) if we didn't embrace that technology. Mobile communication is way of the future, so take advantage being able to learn the newest technology now. If you choose not to, then just take an extra English class, some of you could use it....

  A lot of really intelligent comments on this topic ... not. Maybe the teachers should concentrate on the basics for these students. Shouldn't the school district or the parents put the money out for expensive ipods for the students, instead of trying to get them funded by a group that has many other good causes trying to raise money for their worthy projects. Should every school in Canada be funded to have ipod touches in their schools. We could have used them in medical school, but even there they were not a priority, and very few had them. Your kidding yourself if you think they will help you learn, but I can see why the students want them, a nice expensive toy to play with. For the most part electronic gadgets are not helping people to learn, they are more of a distraction.

  I think this project has some great potential, but some of your comments are not helping your cause at all. Some of you don't realize people who make decisions about giving your school upwards of $10,000 are reading these comments and with the attitudes shown here I highly doubt they'd be inclined to want to give out anything on this project. I hope for your teacher's sake they over-look some of comments in this online conversation.

  I read the idea and it's not half bad,but wouldn't it be a pain to be having to look at the small screens of Ipod touches or iphones or any other mobile device. It would be much easier to do this kind of stuff on a computer

  The idea of having an ipod touch given to all students is silly, there are many more needing groups in this contest. Hopefully this board proves something to anyone about to vote for this. An ipod would not prove a usefull learning tool at all only a gimmicky distraction, as well as theft, lost and broken ipods which will send the cost even more upward than it will already be.
