Students Against Apathy strives to raise enough money to provide medical equipment in the northern reserves with a net value of approximately $100 000 for the screening of the retina for underlying diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and/or glaucoma, this year. Any money won, will be spent on medical equipment to fight diabetes, which is at an epidemic rate,
The vision of the North South Partnership for Children/ Mamow-Sha-way-gi-kay-win is “A future where children, youth and families in the remote First Nation communities have their basic needs met and opportunities, by building a larger circle of caring for the children and their families.”
Our mission as outlined by the North South Partnership for Youth responds to the identified needs of children, youth, families and communities in the remote First Nations. We work to build caring and supportive relationships between voluntary organizations and individuals in the south and the northern First Nations people. We secure resources from voluntary sector organizations, individuals, and other funding bodies in order to meet basic needs and provide programs, training, housing, and medical support.
Macular Degeneration
In the remote reserves type 2 diabetes is at an epidemic rate. Not only diabetes, but suicide rates, inflation and the cost of living itself is skyrocketing. With high unemployment rates, it becomes nearly impossible for the reserves to support themselves educationally, let alone medically. In fact, recently the conditions in the reserves have been assessed by Nick Finney, Acting Head of Emergency Capacity for Save the Children in Great Britain, "the slowest evolved disaster that I've ever worked in." He went on saying, "In a natural disaster, hope is a vital thing. People lose family and possessions, but society is united with those who can help. What I felt in northern Canada was like Darfur. The reasons are different, but there is a hopelessness, a despair, a sense of despondency." However, Finney made a point to stress that he also saw "powerful leadership" in the communities he visited, but said while "they are fighting hard, but they need some help."
At a recent invitation of Chiefs and Band Council of various First Nations communities, Ocular Health Centres (OHC) was asked to help provide their communities with proper ocular disease screening and management from a distance and help reduce costs. However, the remote reserves in Northern Ontario do not have any money, to support the purchase of any any equipment.
Ocular Health Centres is a medical imagining company which specializes in screening the retina for underlying diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and/or glaucoma.
OHN will provide a full retinal examination including OCT, digital fundus photography, IOP’s and visual acuity test. These digital images and personal patient data will be entered into OHN- electronic medical record and sent through a ‘secured diagnostic interface’ needed for the transfer of medical records. This information can be accessed by a Specialist anywhere and at anytime. The specialist will then provide interpretations, diagnosis and management options to the patient and referring eye care professional (General Practitioners, Optometrists or Ophthalmologists).

Yes, you have to register to vote. I would like to take a moment to remind all of us that this is a professional forum, with a highly professional goal. It is not a forum such as YouTube, Face Book or Twitter whereby one attempts to divert attention to other community ideas. Although these ideas are also laudable, comments should be kept to the issue at hand - the relationship of diabetes to blindness with a focus on individuals in the remote north: Individuals who have no access to timely medical attention and hence, may face a lifetime of blindness which could have been easily prevented.

I think that it is important, that we realize the importance of the situation in Northern Ontario. We need to realize that all the issues that we see abroad, such as 3rd world conditions exist in our own country. We must work towards eliminating them. I am not saying that international issues are not important, but, we need to recognize what occurs in our own country. Canada is known internationally for being a humanitarian and compassionate country. We should infact take these ideals and apply to them our own country.

This is an amazing cause, I didn't know that the first nations were in such dire needs. The movie really motivated me to start helping them. It shouldn't cost over $12 to buy a bag of milk there while others in Canada are able to buy it for $4.00.

Hi everyone! What is going on up north (and the fact that, in all possibility, this is being purposely concealed) makes me so angry, but I'm so much more glad that we are proving that we CAN do something about this. I am confident that we can help overturn 200+ years of injustice. Everyone should know about this. We seem to love pointing the finger at people from other times and places, but we should really look in the mirror for once!!!! Keep the votes going... Delphi is awesome :-)

I agree, it is ridiculous for a bag of milk to cost so much. First, we kick the natives out of the their land, which can be argued, but treating them so unhumanly is not humanitarian at all. I always thought Canada was so caring, I realize how I was wrong....Everyone needs to know about this, we need to let Canadians know that we care for them, since the Aboriginals are technically Canadians. Go Delphi....This idea should definitely win.....like one learns something before teaching others....we should help Canadians before extending help internationally....not that we should ignore them but we should at least set the example....Keep the votes coming.....

When I first heard that thre are part of Canada that were as bad as 3rd world countries, I couldn't believe it! The part that got to me the most was the Suicide rate and how 25 people share a one bedroom house. How can SO MANY kids be killing themselves? I hear people talking about how much they hate their lives, want to run away from home or want to kill them selves. Looking at this make me realize how good I actually do have it and how much I have to be grateful for! I'm pretty sure all of use either have our own room or share it with ONE and sibling, and we tend to complain about that one sibling,I know I did when I had to share my room. And our parents have their own room. A one bed room house with 2 people is cramped and uncomfortable. (THANK GOD for Firefox, my spelling is shit xD)

I guess that by voting here and voicing our support, we can see how many people think alike, and the potential of us to change what is happening up there. By voting, we increase our chances to receiving a grant from AVIVA, and we also build communication amongst ourselves, knowing that there are others out there who really care and just don't turn a deaf ear. And just to add, I agree that it is ridiculous that people should share a house with 24 other people. I surely would not like it. And the houses too don't have very strong infrastructure, or heating...Thinking about that, makes me appreciate my house and care more to make a difference. We can help.

These are the kind of problems that are easy to ignore because they are out of sight and out of mind. But imagine if you were living in this community. I wish more people would take the time to learn about this, or just take half a minute to vote. I'm shocked by the apathy I am witnessing. But I'm also so happy with the family and friends who are not only voting, but learning more about Pikangikum and passing the message on. Recently I was given permission to close one of my studio art classes (in UWaterloo) by telling everyone about this link and about our cause. Everyones jaw dropped to the floor when I told them about this reserve (and I kept it very clean). Before leaving they all grabbed a slip from me. It was very motivational.

Hi again. Nice to see that the votes are piling up. Nobody should EVER have to share a one-bedroom house with 24 other people (let alone in the freezing cold), and I can only imagine how rejected these children must feel. I'll never understand why the people in power think that it's okay for these kids to have TV, but no education... This just seems to really get to me in particular. It's high time that ALL kids be treated like the PEOPLE they are for once!

Oh, and, when I first heard about this, I almost couldn't believe that something this fishy was going on... It made me feel thankful for going to Delphi, where I would be told about this kind of thing... IF YOU THINK WE LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY, OPEN YOUR EYES...

WOW!!! It really is motivating to see the combined efforts of everyone. I think that believing any aspect of the video posted by SAA was very difficult to believe. All of it were things that you would never normally here of. I certainly would not like to treated rejected, forgetten and useless. I don't understand how these kids could bear it, but whatever the cause, children should not be committing suicide, or not have enough food to eat anywhere. This is a really good idea...I mean I don't think I would appreciate unadequate medical care, and I sure no one else would either. So keep of the good work Delphi and keep getting votes.....I wish your idea all the best!!!!

Upon reading about this cause i had no idea that natives were being treated so bad. We have all heard that the circumstances up north are harsh but i did not expect it to be so extreme. This is one of the better causes i have seen on Aviva and unlike most of the other programs on this site that have racked in thousands of votes, Students Against Apathy actually deserves to win. Keep staying strong and i believe you will change lives of the many unfortunate people within our own backyard.

Wow, this discusstion is really progressing. And It's nice to see that people responded to what I said. The unemployment rate is 90%. One out of ten adults have a job. So only one or two people in a house have a job, of couse there'll be no money for heating. And it's colder up north too. It's just so tragic. )=

November 14, 2009 @ 11:18 AM EST
SAA
I don't think that it is right to call it tragic, that is a word used to describe a condition over which we have no control at all. Instead of feeling bad about what is happening, we can change the conditions, and in return make them feel good, and feel good ourselves. The forum itself shows the awareness raised, and that in itself is a great accomplishment. We start of as one, then we increase in strength, and seeing that we have gotten over 500 votes, shows the great support we have. So to everyone voting, we thank you, and I sure the reserves do as well, for wishing them a better life.

Hey guys, I'm so excited to actually start making this money, and working towards helping the Natives up in the reserve. Their conditions are horrible, and man has this opened up my eyes to the things that are happening RIGHT INFRONT OF OUR NOSES! I can't believe the government won't do anything to stop these problems. And we're supposed to be the "free country" that we have in our name? Definately not since this is what is going on. I really hope that SAA gets this money. We can really make a huge difference. I mean look at what we've already done. I'm so proud to be apart of this organization. Just the difference that we're making to the lives of these ppl says alot. I really wanted to give a HUGE thanks to the ppl that helpt with the clothes drive. I'm so glad that we shipped more then 100 boxes out, to people in need. ...we've truely made a difference. This whole experince of helping people has shown me that even as such a small person, and just one person, I can make a difference. That I don't need to depend on others to make that difference. And for this lesson, I am glad. This has made me think, if one person can make such a difference. I wonder how big of a difference all of us working together would make?

Hey guys, I am really encouraged to see the support of everyone for this idea. Actually upon reading this idea, I did not really think that people would actually be so enthusiatic about as I was, but now I see that everyone has one goal, to make this idea come true. In fact, the knowledge that this organization has already done so much to support the Aboriginals' inspires me to think that a difference can be made. I always believed in the power of one, but actually seeing one making a difference is a whole different thing then just hearing it. So I wish this idea all the best, and I really hope it wins. The First Nations have waited too long, they don't deserve to wait any longer....

Hello everyone, Wow, I'm so proud of SAA. We've done so much already for the natives, and I can't wait to do more. SAA has already done so much for more then just this cause. We've built schools in Africa, and so much more. SAA has held many clothing drives, and we've brought in so much clothes. The Natives up North also are extremely grateful for what we've done, and know of our group very well. We've also done "Snack Shack" which is when we buy snacks and sell it in our school. We've made so much money out of this, and every penny of profit has gone right back to the Natives. I'm so proud to be part of this group because it has taught me so much about life, and giving. Keep up the good work Delphi. This is a very worthy cause and I know if I had the money, I would support you to the limits. Disgusting really that Canada is still treating the Aboriginals in such a bad way. These are children we're talking about. No child should have to go through so much. 25 people to a house?!! Are you crazy? And people in Toronto are complaining about taxes. These Aboriginal people are paying $13 for one bag of milk and are trying to combat unemployment rates of 90%. CRAZY!!!

I was talking to one of my friends about this, and she couldn't believe that things were as bad as they were on First Nations reserves. So I showed her the video. And now she's ready to help the cause. Remember everyone that talking to even just one person helps so much. Before I got to Delphi I knew very little about the issues that First Nations face everyday, now I'm so passionate about helping them. All it takes it people spreading the word, networking is key everyone! Together we can change the lives of others!

It's scary to see that Canada, one of the most fortunate and luxurious countries in the world would have 3rd world conditions. Ironically, Canada has helped many 3rd world countries across the earth, yet little are done to help First Nations in its own country. Go Delphi!

Hello All, Please keep up the good work. The comments are much appreciated. By the way did you realize that First Nations are approximately 28 years behind the south in education. Yes, that is what the studies state. It will take 28 years for children in the remote north to 'catch up' to southern Ontario. We all know that 28 years is 28 years too long. The problems won't be solved overnight. We might not have been part of the history that sees First Nations in their current situation...however it is our responsibility to change it. You all know that with the freedoms we have here, comes responsibility. We are at 600 votes now - let's see if we can make it to 1000 by Sunday evening. I have been in touch with the grads, they too are well aware of the situation. I am so proud of all of you!

a nation that can't meet its basic needs means the nation will not last forever. the 1st nations has been around for quite some time. so donating cloth and food is the least we can do. education and job opportunities are just as important. Keep up the good work

CheeseHead, Thank you for your support. You're right- donating food and clothing is the least we can do. I have just checked the forecast in Pik. Tonight it calls for freezing rain, snow, and a temperature of -7C. The vast majority of the 'houses' have no indoor heating, plumbing or electricity. Condequently the rate of illness amongst the children is very high.

This is a really fantastic cause!! It's hard to believe that Canada would allow such a thing to happen. First Nations are being stripped away from basic necessity (no access to clean water, food, transportation by road, bus, only planes which is the most expensive transportation). Also, CULTURE! I CAN"T BELIEVE IT! Learning about the First Nations culture, it seems like the most fair, interesting, equal and uncorrupted system. If Delphi wins this money (must win), we can do a lot help them! A big change for Canada's First Nations!!!! Go Delphi!!!

Thanks Babji for reminding people about the clothes drive. The next one will be due in the new year. What is really needed is baby food and baby clothing, along with blankets. As you know the majority of the 'houses' do not have any heat source. The community of Pikangikum is among the most populated among First Nation Communities. The population trend continues to grow at over 3% annually. The birth rate per capita is the highest in the Sioux Lookout Zone. Current statistics indicate the over one-third of Pikangikum is under 9 years of age.

Hello Light, Thanks so much for your comment. As you know we will need many hands to help in this cause. It is multi faceted, from raising awareness amongst other students and the general public, to being able to procure materials such as food and clothing to ship north for the immediate need, the medical equipment, all this coupled with the urgency for education. We always take our direction from the Eldersand Chiefs and their partnership. We feel that they would know their communities the best. Again, thank you for your comments.

Recently i heard that the Childrens Aid Socitey was closed down in this region, becasue of the lack of funding. In this native region there is a very high sucide rate. It's incredible to see an organization so dedicated to helping the First Nations. I had heard about the relocation of the First Nations, but I thought that the situation was this serious. It is sad to know that 9 in 10 people are unemployed. I know, for a fact, that in any country that is devastating for economic growth. No wonder everything is so expensive up there. It is unfortunate to know these kind of conditions exist in Canada. I thought Canada was a supporting, humanitarian country. In fact, I find it hard to believe that Canadians would not want to help the cause, especially as Canadians are famous to be the most giving...come on people, it's time to wake up. Sooner, better than later.

Hi! I think that this is a great cause, because of its effect on others. I think that is idea is widespread and not only for the community but for Canada as a whole, because it targets 30 reserves. Almost $15 for a bag of milk. That is ridiculously inflated. First of 90% of the people are unemployed and on top of that milk and food costs so much. If anything food should cost less so people can afford it, but instead it is so unaffordable. I definitely support this cause and organization, I hope you guys win.... I also watched Jordan's principle. It is unfair that an innocent little kid dies in a dispute between bureaucrats.
November 26, 2009 @ 5:50 PM EST

People should at least if not by the cause, but after hearing that wake up. I mean that an innocent kid, who never saw his family ever died because they were fighting over who would pay the hospital bill. I think that is immature and avoidable. The kid never even got a chance to spend a day with his family, lived his whole life in a hospital. I don't think that anyone would want to face that, at least I would not.

Canada is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, yet First Nations are still getting second class treatment. This doesn't meet with Canada's equality rights. Canadians have taken their land and stuck them in isolated reserves. Yet, the kids there don't get an education and the adults can't find work; they can't even speak up for themselves. Such conditions found in Canada are unimaginable. Thankfully SAA has acknowledged this problem and is spreading the word for help. Good work!

All Canadians should be treated the same. It does not matter what our nationality is. All Canadians should be treated equally including the Natives! All Canadians should be able to have jobs. I was shocked to discover that lack of food, clothing, and clean water was an issue in Canada. I'd expect people to be this underpriviledged in a developing country, not a nation as rich as ours. When I found out that First Nations People were not recieving assistance, I was astonished and outraged. There are numerous children dying each day because of the lack of food, education and healthcare. And Why? Why is this happening? Canada is not at all a poor country. As a matter of fact, Canada is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. So why aren't these First Nations children getting the help they need? The government should be ashamed. And as for us young people, I believe that it is important that we stand up and speak up on their behalf.

Just because we don't see the First Nations' suffering, it doesn't mean we can ignore this problem. It's good that SAA is raising money to change their health situation. I watched 'Jordan's principle' today for the first time and it was shocking that an innocent child should have to suffer because two governments are fighting over who should fund healthcare for first nation children. They should both want to be helping these young children such as Jodan River Anderson. And even if they do have a problem with healthcare funding for first nation people, the government should make an effort to help the child in need first before resolving the issue. To put financial problems before the health and safety of a child is a crime.
November 26, 2009 @ 8:15 PM EST

i agree the government should start funding the native reserves. espicially after watching jordan's principle. nice job guys.

The problem is that people today is that they can help others in need, it’s just that they choose. Most of the first nations already think that we have forgotten about them. With this, we can prove that you don’t have to be a large group to get things done and that we have not forgotten about the first nations. We should fix the wrongs of Canada’s past.

The government should really take responsibility for this issue. I mean, after watching Jordan’s Principle, you can see how the government does not want to help resolve this issue. Just because a child is native doesn’t mean that they should have an argument about who pays the hospital bills. Someone should have take responsibility for that situation and perhaps if the child had gotten the proper attention, they could have lived. That also goes for many other aboriginal children and adults.

A disturbing fact about this is that this is not taking place in a third world country but rather in Canada, my own back yard. It is very disturbing to think we live in a place where we get the proper education and a proper house to live in, rather than the crammed homes they have there. A main problem is that the government is trying to keep people uneducated about this issue so they do not look bad. Thank you Delphi for bringing this reality to us and educate us on this issue. Let’s all try and get people educated on this issue and do something about it.

Deb you were right about the video, it does make you angry because the government argued about a small thing. they should have paid for the cause and decided later who can fund and pay, and other ways for funding. The government should be embarrassed right now and they should come to a conclusion on who will pay and fund. Canada has the money and resources to help the first nations it is just a little effort that they need to put in and we can help them, they don't have to do it alone. But keep up the voting and comments everybody.

What happened to Jordan Anderson should not happen to anyone. He lived his entire life in hospital, amongst sickness and sadness. He never got to experience the life that so many of us take for granted, all because of a disagreement. The worst part about this situation is the fact that the same kind of thing is still happening. If we all spend two minutes each day to vote and post comments on this site, we can help children who are in Jordan’s shoes, and many other children who receive even worse healthcare. Keep ‘em coming, Delphi and friends!

I just watched the movie Back to Pikangikum by Coleen Rajotte and it's a real eye opener. It's really tragic that when the people at Pik face the sucide of a loved one, the goverment choses to help them best by taking all their funding away leaving nothing for them to rebuild. It's truley immoral for the Canadian government to treat the Abroignals as less than human all because the Indian Act, the pure act of rascism. This really needs to stop.

All are created equal, why ar'ent all treated as equals. As long as people are recognized as seperate groups by race, wealth, ability and gender, inequality will always exist. What is it to be a Native, what is it to be White, black, asian, a gay or a girl? What difference does it make, all humans have two hands, two legs, two eyes, a head, opposable thumbs and a mind.

Why do we continue to seperate people into categories? What difference does race make? The natives on reserves have become dedicated Christians, more dedicated than the average Canadian, yet they are classified as red-skins. The newest categories that man has come up with include different mental problems like aspergers syndrome. Those with Aspergers may possess incredible intelligence, yet they are classifed as mentally ill. What is the point of these categories? Why do we seek to create more, if all they do is cause conflict and oppression?
November 27, 2009 @ 11:33 AM EST
Michael
Making a big deal out of minor differences always ends up in conflict and oppression. What seperates a Native from a Christian, most Natives have taken up Christianity, and they take it very seriously, but regardless of their dedication, they are known as nothing more as red-skins by others.

Canada is the trademark for developed countries and known for its peaceful and equal state of living. We are known as peacemakers who make a difference internationally. However, prior to making an impact universally, we must look within ourselves and make a difference locally. We are oblivious to the poor conditions in our own country, only two thousand km northwest of Ontario; children live in conditions worse than those of most 3rd world countries. This grant will help to make the lives of Pikangikum residents bearable and hopefully enjoyable.

It is really encouraging to see a group of so many people come together and work towards one goal. I think that not only is the goal great but the work the people are doing. Another thing that I would like to mention while I am on the website is that I think that the it was and is ridiculous what is happening on the reserves. I sure that Canadians would not mind supporting the cause, especially after knowing the whole origination of the Natives.

All children have aspirations. In order for their dreams to be fulfilled, children need an education. But in Pikangikum, they have the highest rate of suicides of children. I would also like to add that I have learned a lot through the discussions and all the links attached. I think that this cause is well-researched and well-developed and deserves to be supported by AVIVA. I would like to commend everyone who put together the foundation of this idea and add that I support this cause because it makes sense that we fix this issue now. I don't know about others but I think that any other communal idea can wait even though they are all important, but we have neglected the First Nations to long to make them wait any longer. Go Delphi and SAA!!! And the North South Partnership for Children.

Hi everyone!! Firstly, I would like to say that this idea is really good. Whoever wrote it clearly has experience and knows what they are talking about. I think that this idea was very serious after I watched the movie. I recommend everyone to watch the movie. Even though the movie was created by students, I think it was really well done. I also looked at Jordan's principle. I don't understand why people can't see what is happening, I mean I personally never heard of it before but now that I do, I am really motivated to do something and help this club or organization in doing so.

Another thing that I would like to say is when I checked the website for the North South Partnership for Children, I was really surprised. I think that all the facebook posting and all the information is informative. At least I found it so, because I never even knew that Northern Ontario had reserves, so I found it shocking to first know that I did not know so much, and then see what is happening. Knowing how much things cost is really moving and knowing that we need to raise so much to make a difference is also moving. I would also like to help and encourage people to network and pass this link on to others. Good job, SAA!!!

I want to congratulate all of the members of SAA, past and present, and undoubtedly the future (because we all know we'll keep going until we reach our goals!) on all of their hard work. Wat up everybody, keep the votes coming. If more people would take the time to learn about this, than we could really help because it doesn't take very long to vote it just a matter of mouse clicks . Everybody needs to realize that it doesn't take many people to make a difference, all you need to do is just put in a little effort. We must work towards eliminating these problems. The houses don't have very good structure, or heating and other things that are needed to keep warm and to survive. If you think about it we are very fortunate that we don't face those problems and it is up to us to make sure we do everything we can to help. Go Delphi!!

Shortly after Jordan's second birthday, doctors said he could go to a family home. This decision should have been a time of celebration but for federal and provincial governments it was a time to begin arguing over which department would pay for Jordan's at home care. The jurisdictional dispute would last over two years during which time Jordan remained unnecessarily in hospital. The costs they argued over ranged from some higher cost items such as renovations to the home for a wheelchair ramp to low cost items such as showerheads. The community initially tried to mediate a solution between the governments but when this failed they turned to legal action. Shortly after Jordan's fourth birthday in hospital, the jurisdictional dispute was settled but not in time for Jordan who sadly passed away at the age of 5.

Hi! It is so wonderful to see how far SAA has come! I congratulate and encourage you all! I HAVE A SUGGESTION: For the initial write up, it should be more concise, as many people do not click on the movie and therefore, lose interest in the IDEA within the first minute. ALSO, it would be great to see a summary of the idea in FRENCH as well! This way, we are inclusive of both of our national languages! Just an idea, you may not be able to change the description now...but if you can....I think it would really help to increase your votes! I will of course keep voting, and keep encouraging my friends, family, and contacts to do so as well! Best of luck!!

I don't believe that it is fair that normal Canadians can get taken care of properly by our government, but Natives don't have the help of the government. A clear example is Jordan River Anderson. He was sick, went to the hospital, and was getting better. The federal and provincial government however, started fighting over who had to pay. Without any funding, Jordan River Anderson passed away. This is clearly a major blemish and embarassment in the history of the Canadian government. That they would argue instead of helping finance the medical help for this child. No child, should be discriminated against because of their culture or backgroud. By raising awareness, we can stop these outcomes. TAKE CHARGE STUDENTS! DO WHAT THE GOVERNMENT WON'T DO!

You know something Amazed. I agree. This is the only way that we can help the First Nations people. Not enough people know about it so we can't hold rallies. Free the Children and other similar organizations don't care enough to help people in developed countries and even if they did, people would complain. They would say that developing countries need more help, developed countries can help their own people. Go help the developing countries. This people are despicable. They are usually the ones that, on the one hand, advocate human rights and, on the other hand, refuse to acknowledge that developed countries can be so MEAN to their own people.

If Aviva could somehow be known about worldwide, I think the amount of people who learn about the conditions of First Nations in a "developed country" would be apalled. Couldn't finish my comment before...so this is a continuation. It seems so frustrating that I can't do much even when there is a Free the Children group basically next door. I've thought about it so many times. I just wish I could step to that establishment and tell them everything that is happening on this website, but no one really seems to care. I can't even enter without being a member of FTC and to become a member I have to enter. It sort of defeats the purpose of having a FTC group right next door since no one can become a member without entering and to enter you need to be a member.

Well...I can continue voting and commenting here until this idea runs out of time as well. It seems that every idea I vote for or try to support fails in the middle. I hope that doesn't happen with Delphi and Students Against Apathy.

Firstly, welcome to 007. Secondly, I agree with 007. Free the Children may pose to be an open organization, but it is closed. Only people who know people who know people who know Free the Children actually have any say and can actually become members. A random person walking off the street has no say whatsoever in Free the Children. Keep commenting 007. You rock!!!

I think that what 007 said was really important. I have personally not experienced any sort of shut down from the big organizations but what I have experienced that people committed to one cause don't look outside that. I commend the efforts of Free the Children, because they really are doing a good cause, but only if they looked inside the country. However, we cannot only pick of FTC because they are many other organizations too, however, I support this cause because it is different and to me promises change.

Great work guys! Even though this cause does not have the most votes, I think that it is great that the organization was able to raise awareness among so many people. I don't see an organization reaching out more effectively to people nationally than AVIVA. This is not only a great idea on their part, but the way in which Canadians can notice is great. So if a idea does not win, at least it gains some recognition for being known so widely know. Even that is an accomplishment. For example, I for one, will now contribute more and take this idea back to my community and try to help.

Great work guys! You surpassed 1500 votes. Actually lately I have researched this cause and I found out how massive this cause is. I researched Pikangikum and I saw the stats which were epidemic as the movie was. I think that this cause deserves to win, because it is generally one which should not have to wait any longer. It does not deserve to be neglected any more and it is encouraging to see a group of dedicated people who have realized that and are working towards it.

I was directed to this cause by one of my friends and I saw the movie as was really moved. I can't believe some of that stats. Especially knowing the implications of them. One thing that I think is really important to understand is that this problem was not one that arose yesterday, but one that has been there for quite some time. Astonishingly, it is coming to our attention now after so many years. I personally did not even know that Native Canadians even lived in Canada in such bad conditions. I knew they existed by I never really knew where, so know that I know....

I want to make a difference and I think that by voting I am taking the first step towards meeting that goal.. Go SAA....Another thing that I would like to mention is that this cause is really important because medical assistance is something that everyone should already have, and knowing that the natives do not have it is really bad....So you get my vote for sure and I support you through it all.....

Hello all, thanks again for all your support! Just to clear up something Free the Children is beginning to work with First Nations in British Columbia at the moment. Remember the Hon Paul Martin and Phil Fontaine, past national grand chief were at the opening rally this Oct. They asked all the thousands of students at the ACC centre to remember First Nations children. But the issues are very complex even for an organization as dedicated to Children as Free the Children. Not only would they have to deal with the Federal and provincial government but also the Band Councils and then finally aid would reach the those in need. . THe North South Partership, for whom we work along side is direct communication with the residents on the reserves so they can tell us what is needed without going through the layers of government. I know it's frustruating for us to see much needed aid being send to others, but they too are in dire need.

Hi people!!! It's great to see you guys surpassed 1500 votes, how about reaching 2000 by the end of the competition. Anyways, I would like to say thank you to the group who posted this idea for opening my eyes. I now can see what I never saw and it is all thanks to this group of dedicated people. What I really find great about this cause is it's scale and the people who do it. This group is not a organization but a group of students who are so dedicated to making a change. Now, that is encouraging because even though youth are encouraged to get involved I rarely see it and this changed my perspective about youth these days....

The difference in Canada is that the Band Council - which replaced the traditional forms of government on reserves reports to the INAC - Indian and Northern Affairs. If the government feels that the funds are being mismanaged, the government will put the reserve under third party management, which means that the Chief and Council have no control over delievering services to their residents. All cheques are then written by the Indian Agent....yes, you read that right - there are still Indian Agents...Payment to the Indian Agent comes directly from the Band's funds. When Pikangikum was placed under third party management in 2004 - the number of children committing suicides increased. Pikangikum fought the ruling and now has regained control of the reserve. However, if the numbers we've researched are correct - over $300,000.00 [representing a term of three years under third party management] are correct, this means that the Pikangikum, lost those funds for which they could have built inf

infrastructure. Remember it was Free the Children that opened our eyes in 2004. We have had many grad students go to Kenya to work in HIV clincis and build wells. A lot are now enrolled in International Development at the postsecondary level. Free the Children remains an excellent teacher for us, looking at conditions world wide. We have simply choosen to look into Canada's own back yard. This is the difficult part.

Well, I guess I can always try to reconnect with Free the Children. What you said Deb is very important though. The First Nations are still called Indians when we all know that they are not Indians. But then I guess people here still call them Indians not Aboriginals. I have a friend who is always calling the First Nations, Indians. I directed her to this website. Ever since then, she's avoided called First Nations "Indians" and whenever someone does call them Indians in front of her, she gives them a big lecture. One person at a time, everyone's mind set can be changed.

Hey did you know that Canada is the ONLY country in the world to vote TWICE agaisnt the United Nationsl Declaration of the Rights of Indigeneious Peoples. This basically means that the government can infringe on Aborigianl Treaty Rights - the rights to their land, water and resources. To me this doesn't lead to recognization or equality. Does this mean that the government doesn't view Aboriginal peoples in the same light as you or I? That somehow they are less than.....

It never ceases to bother me that the government tries to silence people who speak out about how the First Nations are treated. I just hope more and more that we can bring it to their faces... I'm sorry, but if you put your country out to be the happy place of the world, and keep on hiding what is being done to your own people behind closed doors... That's not a real democracy. I'll never be convinced that it will be.

SERIOUSLY??? CANADA VOTED TWICE AGAINST THE DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES? Deb told me that 3 countries - Canada, the United States, and Australia - voted against the Declaration... Figures that it had to be 3 of the world's largest countries with indigenous populations... No, we can't let them have their land, let's sell it for corporate greed... No, we can't let them have the fresh water you and I take for granted, the corporations need it more...
November 28, 2009 @ 12:47 PM EST

Hi Vittoria. The issue is that northern Ontario is sitting on approximately 500 billion worth of minerals and resources. Aboriginal peoples are not adverse to development - quite the contrary - they want partnerships. The issue is they are so very, very seldom consulted or even recognized. Even when the development happens, the residents of the reserves don't have the education to participate in the development or gain employment - because they don't have the education - after all on many reserves there are no schools.

Hello Zizis. Thank you for your support. However, it is a really complicated situation. Believe it or not it is not simply the government's fault. There are many more players at stake here. I am posting a recent link. This deals with large corporations going onto FIrst Nations land to gain resources. I do hope all of you who are following the cause have the time to read this. It will give up an idea of how many in the general public preceive First Nations. However, I urge all of you who are voting or commenting,do not post angry replies. Just think slowly, calmly and deeply about what is being said about First Nations. In the meantime keep voting and commenting. We have come a long way!!!!! it's hard to believe that first nations people are living in awful conditions right here in Canada. In our own Backyard! And truth be told, up until a few monthes ago, I had no idea. Hello all, Firstly a big thanks to all of your who are supporting us. The SAA and all the students at Delphi, friends, parents and their collegues from work, as well as all our graduate students and those from other secondary schools. It means a great deal! I always enjoy reading the comments. Yes, 007 there is a great deal of what many perceive as injustice, but what is involved legislation and many large, powerful organizations. That is why SAA joined the North South Partnership in this endeavour. Only by joining together here in the south can we make a difference in the north. Like the closing comments say on the vid - it has to begin with each one of us..it can't be left up to others.

There has been many, many times in the past where people not involved in the First Nations Communities have made the communities decisions for them. Often with disasterous outcomes. With this initiative we actually listen to what these communities need most of all. That is what caught our eye about the Aviva competition. It can offer the North a voice in the south. Here is one initiative that concentrates on the actual communities and listens to what is needed, from those directly involved in the community.

They had their land taken and had to give up on their way of life. They had to give up their religion and become dedicated Christians. Despite their race, they are more dedicated to the Christian God than most Caucasian Canadians. Despite all they had lost, we could at least give them the same rights as any other citizen. They need a chance to prosper, yet no one is giving it to them.

The government’s way of helping the first nations is taking away their money. How do they even get away with that?! In the film 'Back to Pikangikum', it showed that people, including teens, were turning to drugs and alcohol because their conditions were so bad. A young girl's drawing showed herself committing suicide with a smile on her face. If I were put in the first nations’ situation, I wouldn't have much hope in life either. But, no matter how hard life may seem to be, we can make a change. These medical equipments could potentially save many lives. It will show the first nations that we do care about them.

I really wish this idea the best of luck. This will be affecting the lives of many and it is important that we realize that providing this medical equipment can change the lives of many for the better. These are supplies that the reserve should have been supplied with already, but they were not, so this cause is really good at least in my opinion. I am not sure what implications this will have, but saving many from blindness is sure something that I would like to do. The first nations will be proud of SAA, because it is doing so much to help them, raising this kind of money really is not that simple.

Hey guys, I think it is important that all of us who support this idea comment to show how strongly we feel for it. Not only is this idea something huge in Canada, but one of major blemishes on Canada's forefront reputation. I think that Canadians can work hand in hand with the First Nations people to give them what they rightfully deserve. I mean, we cannot continue to move the Natives further and further north, we might as well say they don't own anything. But, the provision of medical supplies will really benefit the community, because it saves the community from being disabled. I think that vision is one of our most important senses....
November 29, 2009 @ 3:52 PM EST
Jordan
....because we tend to rely on it a lot. I mean you could work and do everything without eyesight, but people highly regard eyesight, I mean if everyone was blind then the community would not be able to prosper....and with saving blindness we can save the community from not prospering and work with it so it will eventually become self-sufficient and independent, like they want to be. We should save the youth and work with them to help them become the great future of Pikangikum's tomorrow. The past has passed, the present is passing, but the future is going to pass.

I agree with you jordan 2, these are the darkest chapters of Canadian shunned history. Its ironic to see how Canada is able to help save thousands of people across the whole wide world just in a short period of time. Yet the First Nations have been suffering since the Europeans found Canada!!! SINCE THE TIME OF FINDING CANADA!!!! Thousands of African, Kenyen, etc of kids around the world are being saved from starvation and unsanitary water, or diseases. Yet First nations have been enduring diabetes, high suicide rates, STARVATION, THIRST, going blind and i don't know what else they are suffering but its probably horrific. To see your best friend die, and to see them smiling and literally happily welcoming death into their lives. It's unimaginable of what's going on!! The government has robbed them of entriely everything, culture, race, EVERYTHING down to the last drop of blood........Delphi has to win this money!!!!!!! Great cause Delphi!! Just want to say that I believe that these idea deserves to win because I think that we cannot wait any longer for the change to happen. It has to happen today, right now, and if this cause wins I can see that happening. I think there is no better cause than preventing blindness, because for many that is the structure of their life, and if someone's eyes are stolen away from you, you might not feel that life does not hold that beauty that it once had. Come on guys we can do this! DELPHI SPIRIT. anyway i just wanted to thank aviva for the wonderful oppurtunity theyve presented us. They are not only donating money and helping save lives but through practices such as this by getting young high school students to ban together and vote they are helping raise community awareness.
November 29, 2009 @ 5:33 PM EST
John
Aside from all those, I think that this cause deserves to win strongly because it will affect 30 communities not just one. Imagine one idea that can be implemented and save blindness in 30 communities. I think that this cause is really important, the natives deserve to receive help after bearing decades of racism and isolation. It's time that they get the opportunity to live a life just like us, after all we are all humans with two eyes, one nose, one mouth. I don't understand though, why the natives were separated from society. I understand the whole racism concept but what doesn't make sense is why?
November 29, 2009 @ 5:34 PM EST
John
They could actually help Canada to prosper, yet they were shunned...Just because of their lifestyle and because they refused to assimilate. Anyways Go Delphi!!! You guys can win and will win with the spirit and optimism that all of you behold.
November 29, 2009 @ 5:35 PM EST
Delphi
Come on delphi! Think about the cause this is going to. Were helping raise money for children up north. This money will go towards aiding them against foreign diseases and definately help save lives. Thank you aviva for this wonderful oppurtunity.

John definately got the right idea here. The government is trying to hide the matter and I think its up to us, the youth of today, to bring this matter to the attention of the people and figure a way to solve it
November 29, 2009 @ 5:43 PM EST

John, you are correct. The aboriginal population is the fastest growing population in Canada. Indeed, these students will help shape Canada's future.

I don't attend Delphi, but now I am motivated to. I would have never believed that such a small school has the power to do so much on their own, but now I think my vision is different. I think that this cause is very important because of its past. This cause goes back at length, and now that I think about the relationships between the Natives and Canadians it isn't really good, when I think, living in the same country if not best friends than two cultures can at least not be enemies. I would like to encourage all who visit AVIVA to vote for this cause. Gandhi once said, "You must be the change you want to see in the world." And that's what Delphi does so best of luck and hope you win!! I am excited to see that change for the better is coming and strongly.

yes i agree. we have collectively brought attention to such a hidden cause which is the situation the natives face. hopefully and assuringly with the awareness created with our aviva idea, we can use this as a stepping stone to walk in the right direction in the future.

First of all it’s amazing how much Delphi/Students Against Apathy has done in short amount of time. Secondly it’s sad to see that in our country where we provide universal health care, the people in the remote First Nation's seem to get very little of what the rest of country gets for available healthcare. I think this idea is good to help with the blindness caused by epidemic rate of diabetes in remote First Nations. By the actions of helping with the idea shows we care about them.

the way native children and people are treated is morally unjust. everyone in this country is equal, this was their land first. the government should be ashamed of what they are doing.

AbiSmiles
I'm quiet late commenting, I realize that, but, I also like having the last word, or maybe atleast one of. The gorvenment tartste first nations people worse than it treats the immigrats. they are treated as second classcitizens in a first world country. Kids are dying in hospitals because people are arguing over who i to pay for it and wo is to fund the health care for the first nations people.
November 29, 2009 @ 10:41 PM EST
angel
every minute another native child is lost, from malnutrition, lack of care, lack of medicine and so many other problems. Jordan Andrew is just another example of this and he is not the only one. Canada adopted the Jordan principle yet it still hasnt made much of an effort to follow its own law. it needs to be enforced just as much as these people need help.
November 29, 2009 @ 10:41 PM EST
angel
im passionate about this because it is a serious issue. When i was a child i used to waste alot of things and take stuff for granted but then i started surfing the TV and channels like vision tv would alwaays be showing those heart wrenching shows about people around the world. my mom would never let me change the channel. this made me more aware of thes issues and the fact that it is happening in our own backyard is despicable!
November 29, 2009 @ 10:44 PM EST

Schools are also not being funded.... Why is the government so heartless?!?!??!?!?!?!? -.- This is not the gorvrnments country, this is NOT our country its their. The first naion people diserve better treatment than us! If they don't get it there is really no point to thanksgiving day, it is just another excuse for the media to ake us buy stuffand for us o stuff our faces. I mean, if we ere trely greatful for for the land the we STOLE from the First Nations Peopl, we wouldn't be treating them like we treated the imigrants about 90-95 years ago.
November 29, 2009 @ 10:48 PM EST
AbiSmiles
I think te government should be shamed of this. They are in a way killing these kids, simply because they can't decide on who should payfor the healthcare of the first nations people. We should all work towards making the government realize what they are doing wrong, and try to do what we can to help the first nations people, and that is why this is such a good cause. =D

Hi! Although we didn't win, I find it hopeful that we were only short by 25 votes... After all, we were really just a small group of people up against huge schools and companies. And we sure did educate tons of people who probably wouldn't have known about this otherwise. I don't know, but I hope you're right about there being something more, Deb... By the way, good luck to all the semi-finalists!!
