Grow Regina is a volunteer group operating under the auspices of the Regina and District Food Bank, with a mandate to improve the social, cultural, and economic wellbeing of Regina residents through community gardening. The Yara-Grow Regina Community Garden, located in McLeod Park, serves over 200 families in its second season of operation. Our goal is to transform this garden into a "world class" community garden that will set the standard and serve as an inspiration for other groups and communities.
Our dream garden will incorporate a variety of amenities including a handicap accessible gardening area. Our idea is an accessible garden within the commmunity garden that will allow individuals with disabilities to experience the joy of gardening.
The project will consist of approximately 10 accessible raised beds with drip watering, an accessible storage shed, trellises, accessible fruit trees and shrubs, a shelter for gardeners awaiting para-transit and a collection of special tools suitable for various disabilities.
The accessible garden will complement the network of wheelchair accessible garden paths to facilitate interaction between disabled and non-disabled gardeners. By partnering with agencies serving the disabled, the project will ensure that for the first time, those with significant diabilities in Regina will be able togrow fresh produce, have access to horticultural therapy and enjoy the social interaction and sense of community associated with community gardening.
