What happens when you engage Canadian high school students in a dialogue about human rights?
Empowerment.
Elephant Tale is a not-for-profit initiative that aims to bring human and environmental rights education into Canadian classrooms in ways that directly link students to their power to change the world.
This isn’t just a history lesson - Elephant Tale involves building a community on an educational foundation and bringing it to life by giving youth tangible tools to better their knowledge and increase their awareness of global issues. Armed with this knowledge, they can engage in the political process, exercise critical thinking skills, become smart, ethical consumers and be part of a support base that continues to inspire as it expands individual efforts nationwide.
Elephant Tale programs can be customized to fit each student group in a way that best fits their learning style. We use a combination of lesson plans, class talks, interactive learning tools, and important guest speakers to connect students to relevant people and issues.
Using documentaries and case studies that give students an in-depth look at relevant issues, Elephant Tale programs transform the learning process into an engaging, hands-on experience that continues outside of the classroom. Our goal is to offer tools that connect and inspire to help reshape the world around us.
Over 70% of the students involved in our pilot programs shared that they want to continue being a part of our initiative and we’re confident that we’ll continue engaging more as our programs develop. With support from the AVIVA fund we plan to further develop and implement interactive classroom resources and technologies to increase education possibilities. The funds will also aid in covering Elephant Tale’s costs for activities, facilitation and transportation throughout the year.
Help support future leaders of a great Canadian tradition and vote for Elephant Tale!

I truly believe this project will go a long way in fighting apathy. With it's current goal of adopting its program into the Ontario cirriculum, it has major possibilities. Susheela should be commended on not only her good idea, but simultaneously her methodological approach. To adopt this program into the Ontario ciricullum guarantees optimal chance at success.

That sounds fantastic, I really do hope you get it going and inspire young people like myself. I'm Vibhuti's friend btw. I think our Civics courses really suck too and youth tend not to get involved in stuff. So best of luck to you!!

The above idea suggests that environmental and humanitarian problems is the place to start in understanding issues that transcend our national boundaries. It recommends integrating such an education into the high school curriculum. I interpret the purpose as to educate people about global issues in an intellectually open classroom setting rather than from more biased sources such as the media. It seems like the ideas are a bit fragmented, but as long as the group focuses on the purpose, then they have my vote.
