Overview:

Mini Rugby is a great way for kids to participate in physical activity, promoting fun while encouraging their physical, mental, social and emotional development.  We believe that by getting kids involved with mini rugby at an early age, we are encouraging physical activity by making it fun and exciting, with the goal of making activities like this a part of daily routine and the beginning of an active future.

Mini Rugby helps to develop fundamental movement skills including agility, balance, coordination, speed, running, kicking, throwing, catching, and jumping in a well-structured positive environment.  Beyond the physical benefits of this development, mini rugby is effective at developing the child’s confidence – which will help to create many opportunities as they grow.

Mini Rugby has three age divisions – all of which are co-ed. The U-8 and U-10 groups focus on the fundamental movement skills while developing a positive team atmosphere that encourages teamwork and social development. In the U-12 age group, the ABC’s of overall sport skills continue to be developed while core rugby skills and concepts are developed. For all age groups the ethics of fair play is considered to be a consistent theme and core concept.

The Guelph Redcoats RFC was launched this past year with men’s and women’s teams competing in the Niagara Rugby Union’s senior competition and a U-18 men’s team in the NRU junior competition. The Redcoats continue a strong tradition of rugby in the Guelph area with more than 40 years in the high schools, the University of Guelph and in club rugby. Now, many of the players that have developed through Guelph rugby are starting families of their own and are looking towards rugby as a fun, healthy activity for their children to participate and develop in.

We anticipate the growth of the club in 2014 to include Mini Rugby as well as U-16 boys and U-18 women’s teams. Any contribution will be directed towards the equipment required to effectively run these teams including balls, kit, flags, field rentals and  the development of a strong coaching and mentoring program for rugby in Guelph.
