Overview:BIWAASE'AA, the program has been designed to eradicate child poverty and racism by increasing the life skills of children and their families through cultural awareness, academic improvement, after-school programs and nutritional support. Culturally designed to serve the needs of the of urban Aboriginal children/youth and their families living in Thunder Bay who are experiencing the effects of poverty.
BIWAASE'AA is an inclusive program for both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginals consisting of an in-school program, after-school program and food security program that is delivered by a highly reputable and culturally competent team of Aboriginal Youth Outreach Workers.
- Role modeling (Little Eagles and Girl Power)
- In- Class Cultural Teachings
- Literacy Support
- Powwows and Cultural Workshops
- Community Outreach
- Parent/caregiver liaison
- activities immersed in Aboriginal culture and traditions
- Family Literacy Nights
- Field Trips
- Holistic - balance of physical, cultural, mental and emotional programming
- sharing circles, crafts, traditional teachings, sports, and fun!
The provision of healthy food supplementation helps to meet their nutritional needs in turn will improve ability to learn, engage in physical activity, develop positive eating habits and aid in growth and development. Additionally, traditional teachings related to food and hunting and gathering are shared.
