Overview:Lunenburg, a town of 2,300 people located on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, is a vibrant community with abundant opportunities to participate in recreational activities promoting a healthy and active lifestyle. The centrally located community-built facilities need upgrading however at this time they don’t require major renovations. These facilities include a curling rink, arena, swimming pool, tennis courts, and the Lunenburg War Memorial Community Centre that throughout the winter months hosts a very full schedule of activities. The Town also has a running track, softball and soccer fields, outdoor basketball courts, and a skate park. Our facilities meet the needs of our children and youth as well as offering well attended recreational programs for seniors. We are grateful to have these public spaces and facilities however what Lunenburg is lacking an outdoor multi-use covered space. Residents of Lunenburg are striving to address this need by building a community pavilion with the project being led by the Rotary Club of Lunenburg.
The Rotary Community Pavilion will be an all-ages venue. Residents and visitors to the area will benefit by having a central gathering place to celebrate the events that make up our lives on the South Shore – family reunions, Canada Day celebrations, church picnics, business meetings, company BBQ’s, or an impromptu concert. The Pavilion will be available to teachers at the adjacent Bluenose Academy as an outdoor classroom. Parents and participants in day long sporting events, who previously sought shelter from inclement weather in their tents, will be able to keep dry under the covered Pavilion. The multi-purpose structure, measuring 32' x 50', will accommodate 100 people and have picnic tables and charcoal BBQs.
Being chosen to receive funding from the Aviva Community Fund would enable us to move forward to build the Pavilion which will enhance the recreational and cultural experiences for every resident in our community.
