Overview:The Selkirk Saddle Club (a non-profit organization since 1974) in Revelstoke, BC has been fundraising for several years in order to build a 60’ x120’ covered riding arena. Due to the astronomical snow load we have in Revelstoke it is an extremely huge undertaking for a smaller club.
Having a covered riding area would help to strengthen our existing programs by enabling our members to ride and exercise their horses year round.
Having a covered riding arena would also allow us to create new programs for children, allowing them to learn responsibility and commitment through the horses. This arena would allow us to develop more diverse recreational opportunities in the community for children and adults alike. Not having an area where the kids can ride year round makes it difficult for those wanting to move into a competition level for any of the many disciplines. In the past when the club had kids competing it was obvious of the disadvantage not being able to train year round.
Also, there are a couple of our members currently taking a course for Therapeutic Riding. Once we receive our certification, having the arena would allow us to set up a therapeutic riding program for disabled children in the community. This is a program that cannot be started without the ability to hold an appointment with the child. With the typically poor weather in Revelstoke it would be near impossible to offer this program on any kind of consistent basis which is what is required to have the fullest benefit to the child. We want to be a benefit to these children and not a detriment and that is what occurs when we have to cancel due to poor weather conditions. A therapeutic riding program would also allow members of the community to participate and volunteer to assist with the children. We have already had a few people approach us and ask if they can volunteer if we get a program up and running.
All in all, this project will be benefiting more than just the members of the community that house their horse at the equestrian grounds.
