Overview:We all know Nick, or know someone who knows him..........here is an update on his story.
On paper, Nick is an average teenager. He was born June 10th, 1994, and has three siblings, Rob, Valerie & Jamie. Nicky is popular, loves music, always has a smile on his face, and knows how to make people laugh. He fell in love with New York City on a school trip & plans to go back to "live like a New Yorker." He dreams of meeting his hero (Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters), has a girlfriend, recently graduated from high school, and plans to become an electrician.
Nicky, however, has shown himself to be anything but average. Mid-way through his final year of high school, on December 24th, 2011, Nicky was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
By summer 2012, after months of chemotherapy & with the support of his family, friends & the medical staff at McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, Nicky's cancer was in remission. He was able to attend his prom and graduated with his friends from Saint Paul High School in Niagara Falls.
But in August 2012, while his friends were getting ready to begin their post-secondary studies, Nicky was back in the hospital.
On July 10th, one month after his 18th birthday, Nicky became sick with a blood infection that led to severe septic shock. He was put on life support in an effort to preserve his vital organs which had begun to fail.
Due to the blood infection and resulting sepsis, Nicky suffered a number of blood clots throughout his body. He lost circulation to his extremities resulting in the amputation of both his hands and both his feet. On September 20th Nicky had a very successful surgery to repair a brain aneurysm.
Nicky's body may be different and he may need to relearn how to do many of the everyday things that most of us take for granted, but Nicky has proven he is a fighter and he will prove his dreams don't need to be forgotten. He can still play music. He can go back to New York. He can become an electrician.
In the meantime, he will continue to defy illness. He will continue to amaze his family, his friends, and his doctors with his strength & his spirit. He will continue to be Nicky, and his smile will continue to inspire those who support him, and when Nick leaves McMaster, he will be standing taller than he ever has before.
As a fundraising campaign we would like to raise $500,000. Nicky will need extensive physical and psychological rehabilitation. Nicky will need prosthetics for all four limbs.
Depending on the type of prosthetics Nicky needs & deserves, the cost can range up to, or over, $50,000 per limb. His family will also need to refit their homes to accomodate all of Nicky's needs when he returns.
This will not be an easy road for Nicky or his family, and monetary issues should not be a concern for them. We are hoping that you may be able to assist in reaching these goals for the Roma family.
