Overview:Fort Albany First Nation is a community in Cochrane District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. Situated on the southern shore of the Albany River. The population on reserve is estimated at 900. Fort Albany First Nation is one of two communities along the cost of James Bay without an arena.
We have 3 teams with the Minor Hockey in the divisions of Bantams (girls), Peewees and Atoms that are active and there are other community members that are starting up other teams in the divisions of Novice and Tykes.
My cousin Jonathan Nakogee and I coached the Atoms team last year and for practice we use to use the outdoor rink outside my house as of today we are using the School Gym for practice 3 times a week until it gets cold enough to make an outdoor ice rink. Although we do not have an Arena in our community but our team members do not get discouraged because the love for the game is there..we had days where they would complain and state how it would be nice to practice inside a real Arena and a proper place to get ready cold but we made due with what we had
The wish and dreams of these Children is to have a proper place to play, to have an actual arena in our community. I believe it is a wish the whole community dreams of.
Due to not having an Arena in our community there are some families/individuals that have relocated to urban settings where they can actually pursue their dreams and their goals.
I wanted to state that last year youth members of our community formed a team in the Midgets Division and picked up other youth member that live off reserve and won the Muskego Challenge Hockey Tournament that was held in Timmins, Ontario.
The team that we coach always look forward to out of town tournaments but I can only imagine what it would be like to host one in our very own community of Fort Albany First Nation.
