The Hope Springs for Community Kids

Overview:

1.       We will  create a “Kid’s Zone”, an area specific to children filled with nutritious food. We have a room in our building at 576 Edward Street that used to be a daycare but the daycare has moved.  The room is designed for the comfort of children with large windows and access to a fenced playground with a sandbox etc...  We would need some child sized tables and chairs to make it a little more comfortable for the children but it is totally possible to serve nutritious food in this space while the parents are waiting their turn in the food bank.  We would need an individual to plan and prepare the food. We have a “table manna “program in the church already; we could involve some of the moms in putting together the food for the children. There are great ideas in the “Basic shelf cookbook”, they are available at about $8.00 a book and perhaps with some money from  donors we can purchase some for parents or get permission to copy their ideas.  We have a dental clinic for kids’ “Health Smiles” right in this building and they give out “Meal Planning made easy” to their clients; we can access some of those ideas too.  We get the “Good Food Boxes” here.  That is a collective bulk purchasing of fresh fruits and vegetables which helps us to save up to half off the retail value of produce so we could make the best use of whatever dollars we are granted. We would like to send some of the food up to Cape Croker youth (Chippewa’s of Nawash unseeded band #27) with the volunteers who run the food bank each Monday up there at the community centre and we have been asked if we could share with the youth 12 years – 16 years of age who congregate at the Youth drop in on Berford Street here in Wiarton each evening; many of them without supper.
