Overview:Youth In Policing After School Initiative ______________________________________________________________________ Mission: All youth will be U.N.I.T.E.D U - Understand and appreciate diversity N - Navigate their future through personal and professional goal setting I - Involve themselves as leaders in the community T - Think and reflect globally E - Empower others to be ambassadors of change D - Discover policing beyond the uniform ____________________________________________________________________________
Facts: • 60 Youth from the Durham Region • 9 hours per week • 14 week programs (126 hours total)
Goal: To have young people, in partnership with Durham Regional Police Service and the community of Durham, contribute in a meaningful way to the safety, maintenance, and beautification of their community while strengthening their ability to work together in teams, build partnerships, and develop as leaders, to make their community a safer place in which to live, work, and play.
Objective: To design an after school program that helps young people develop strong mentor relationships with the police and adults, encourages them to develop a positive image of themselves and their peers, provides them with and encourages them to overcome challenges and build resilience, allows them to practice their leadership and decision making skills, provides them with guidance while they develop their autonomy and sense of self, engages learners and facilitators in the Problem Based Learning model by providing a natural platform of community based learning, which incorporates the following: • Short term goal setting • Identification of personal and community needs • Self direction • Problem solving • Research and discovery • Exploration and actualization of ones ideas • Clear outcomes and implementation of solutions • Personal reflection • Evaluation of process and outcomes This will be achieved by providing learners with opportunities for growth, structure, safety, and positive mentorship.
Why Problem Based Learning?
•Problem Based Learning allows students to use real life, interesting experiences to develop as leaders, community members, and ambassadors of change. • Problem Based Learning helps students develop their emotional intelligence, problem solving abilities, social skills, leadership, communication, and team work. • Problem Based Learning engages students in the development of their community; as they identify and develop solutions for problems facing their community they will become invested while developing a sense of ownership and pride in their community. • Problem Based Learning allows students to explore the history and diversity of their community. • Problem Based Learning allows students to explore their ideas and turn them into solid projects that effect positive change in their communities.
