Feasibility Study for a mini YMCA for Manitoulin Island
Municipality of Central Manitoulin Economic Development Committee
September 25, 2012
More than 1,000
Overview:Manitoulin Island with about 13,000 people does not have a pool for the community. The young people do not have a recreational facility on the island for swimming and other recreational pursuits. We are also proposing a medical component for the prevention of heart disease, to deal with the high rate of rheumatoid arthritis on the island and other medical conditions.
We are hoping to build a small version of the YMCA beside the hospital in Central Manitoulin. This facility would see 1-2 swimming lanes, small hot tubs for medical use and older adults. We hope to include an indoor walking track for cardio rehab, as well as a space for older adults to get together with computers and other teaching aids. We would like to include a day care centre for small children and space for visiting professionals. The centre would be linked to the site in Sudbury (2 hours away) to specialists who could monitor activities within the centre.
At this point we need $25,000 for a feasibility study to explore this idea!
