Overview:Hovey Insurance & Financial Services Ltd, a member of The Huestis Group is excited to enter The Hampton Skate Board Park for the Aviva Community Fund Contest. Our town is full of incredible pride in community and an abundance of town spirit. Without the help of the Aviva Community Fund, it will be some time before this skate park can be completed, as all money that have been raised thus far has been done by community fundraising. A Skate Park in our town would be a wonderful addition to an already incredible Recreational Area. We are proud to live and work in this wonderful community. Cheri Bradley CAIB General Manager Hovey Insurance Financial Services Ltd Town of Hampton Skate Board Park Our story: At a public presentation of the Town of Hampton’s Recreation Master Plan, two young middle school boys, named Sam and Jacob stood up in front of Town Council and the residents of the Town and asked for a skate board park to be built. They had a few sheets of lined scribbler paper filled with many signatures that they had collected going door to door in the community. Many signatures were from kids like themselves who also skateboarded. Sam spoke first of how there were many kids who live in our great town that skateboard and they need a safe place to do so. Jake spoke of how many of them have had to travel to the City of Saint John to skate and sometimes as far away as Bathurst. They were tired of businesses and residents getting upset at them skating in parking lots and on town property unsafely. Sam and Jacob, along with many signatures, recommended that the Town include a skate board park in the recreation master plan. The Town of Hampton is located about 35 km northeast of Saint John. We are a small, friendly community with many points of interest and beautiful natural scenery. We are nestled on the Kennebecasis River, a tributary of the St. John River. The town’s rolling hills, waterways, farmland, wildlife and world-renowned marsh area. Our town motto is “It's our nature.” Hampton is a great little community of approximately 4,300 residents. The surrounding local service districts also rely on our community for many of their amenities, including recreation. The town has many great reasons for families to live here. We have a primary school, elementary school, middle school and high schools for all our kids to attend. We have an arena, a community pool, tennis courts, ball fields and basketball courts for kids to use. What we don’t have for the youth in our community, and have been told by the youth that we need, is a Skate Board Park. A free, safe area for this recreational activity as not everyone plays team sports. That is why we are in need of your support and assistance. Town Council supports the idea of building a concrete skate board park. They formed a Skate Board Park Committee. After much discussion from the committee as to what the park should look like, the committee decided to get input from the skaters themselves. This was a way for the youth in the community to really take ownership of the park. Skaters at Hampton Middle and High Schools provided input on what design elements they wanted included. The committee researched pros and cons of many existing facilities. We began working with a well-known and respected company who builds concrete parks. We have held several successful community fundraisers including a New Year’s Eve dance, bottle drive, Town-wide yard sale and a Canada Day Concert. The profits from these events paid for the design drawings of the Park. The Town of Hampton commissioned the engineering drawings. Our plans are for a 6600 Square Feet, aesthetically-pleasing concrete skate park with trees, seating and lighting in and around it. It has been designed for different levels from beginners to highly advanced skaters. The Town of Hampton is willing to donate land to have a skate park built and maintain the park once it is constructed. The location of the park will be just off Main Street, adjacent to the High School. It is a recreational hub that includes tennis courts, basketball, sports fields and a walking track. During the summer and early fall, sporting events are taking place most evenings. However we are unable to fund the building of the park without donations from the private sector. Community involvement will include in kind donations of materials, and resources. The Skate board park committee has put numerous hours of work into the cost, design and choice of builders for this skate park. Our plan is to have this project booked to be built by spring 2013 if we are successful with our attempt to win the “Aviva Community Fund” contest. Thank you in advance for the excitement and hope this will give to our kids. Bob (Dewey) Doucet Town of Hampton Councilor / Hampton Skate Board Park Committee Chair.
