Overview:
SHARP has been providing care and support to marginalized people living with HIV for over 20 years and have clearly demonstrated the success of its programming. We recognize that we need to continue diversifying our services as the community we serve becomes more diverse. Project Kathleen has been developed from our experience working with women and the knowledge that they have provided us on what to consider to improve the chances of success.
Our intent is to create a safe, compassionate nurturing home for highly vulnerable women living with HIV in our community. These are women who have a long history of poverty, homelessness, exploitation, substance use, mental illness, and/or a host of other health issues. This project is aimed to help them build health, self-esteem and skills to succeed in the community by providing intensive supports. Each client we serve will have their own bedroom which they can decorate on their own or with the help of a designer - something many have never had in their lives. They will work together to plan and implement daily work schedules, menus, recreational and social activities, and budgeting. To assist them, they will be connected with a wide variety of community resources including social service agencies, health services, financial institutions, educational institutions, women's groups, and many volunteers.
SHARP has already secured funding for staffing through Alberta Health Services and a house with the help of our ongoing partner, Calgary Housing Company. We are now seeking $50,000 to purchase furniture, appliances, linens and other household goods to truly make it a home that the clients we serve can be proud of.
Help us make this a reality!
