Idea acf1200:

Learning Through Hip Hop

Posted October 14, 2009

  • Posted by: Scott Collegiate
  • Organization: Scott Collegiate
  • Location: 3350-7th Ave, Regina, SK
  • Category: Improve Education
  • Cost: Big ($50,000 – $250,000)

What is the big idea?

Soon embarking on its third incarnation, the Scott Collegiate Hip Hop Project involves a unique community partnership with the University of Regina. Two mornings a week, students work towards earning an Arts Education 10 credit at the Interactive Media and Performance studios at the U of R. Dr. Charity Marsh facilitates sessions with local Hip Hop DJs, graffiti artists, MCs, and B-Boys and B-Girls. In one of the studios outfitted with turntables, students learn the art of scratch. In the other studio, students learn how to use the MPC beat machine and computer software (Ableton Live) to make music. In addition to the music side, Dr. Ann Kipling Brown from the University of Regina as well as her Education Dance students work with Scott students to learn about various forms of dance, and how dance can be used to enact social change. When not at the University, students are doing activities around the six strands of English Language Arts that relate to Hip Hop. They are reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing Hip Hop culture. The project has been very successful, and was recently awarded the prestigious Lieutenant Governor’s Arts Award for Learning.

Where is Scott Collegiate located?

Scott Collegiate is located in North Central Regina, a neighbourhood made famous by Macleans Magazine’s expose in 2007 that called it the “Worst Neighbourhood in Canada.” Those of us who teach at Scott Collegiate, however, see a different side of the neighbourhood – the potential. Our predominantly Aboriginal students are dedicated, incredibly talented young people with much to offer the world. Projects like the Hip Hop Project engage students in their learning, and give them a positive outlet for their thoughts, feelings, and ideas.

Sounds good, but then what is the money for?

Up until now, the project has relied on money from various grants to run. Transportation to and from the University, and time in the Independent Media and Performance Labs come at a substantial cost. While future projects will include some time at the University as it is integral to the goal of connecting students to post-secondary education, much of the time at the University is spent by students practicing what they have learned. If we were given this money, it would be used to purchase computer software and hardware to enable students to make beats and record songs right in their classroom. By building this Hip Hop Lab in Scott Collegiate, the long-term viability of the Hip Hop Project will be guaranteed.

Why should I support this idea?

Through this project youth have re-engaged with their education. Students who struggle with attendance have shown up every day. Students have uncovered new talents and passions. Students have succeeded when they haven’t in the past. This project has changed our students’ lives and with your help will continue to do so. Thank you for your support!
