Overview:
You may be used to the word Cancer. But no one is used to it entering their life.
Imagine being diagnosed, or learning that a loved one has been diagnosed, with CANCER. Imagine how you would feel...scared, anxious, worried about the reaction of your friends and family, overwhelmed, and ALONE.
More and more people are being diagnosed with cancer—we now have an epidemic here in Quebec. According to the Canadian Cancer Society, one person is newly diagnosed with cancer every 13 minutes—44,000 new people being diagnosed per year.
Now imagine that there is a place to turn to for information, support, guidance and service. Imagine that you would NEVER have to feel alone. The good news is there is no need to imagine this. It exists.
The West Island Cancer Wellness Centre (WICWC), is a non profit who serves people with cancer and their loved ones by providing psychosocial education, support, programs, and professional services for mind, body, and spirit. We serve men, women, and children of all ages and all types of cancer, from diagnosis to one year post-treatment.
The medical system fights to research and conquer the disease. The WICWC works to strengthen and empower the person encountering cancer. By augmenting medical services with psychosocial services, we create a proven, whole-person approach to cancer care.
Some of our programs include: Art Expression Ask the Nurse Back On Track, Life after Cancer Program Caregivers Support Group Garden Club Glass Fusion Mosaic Workshop Integrated Energy Therapy Journal Writing Laughter Yoga Library Resources Lymphedema Therapy Making healthy creams and lotions Workshop Meditation Mentorship Program Nutritional Cooking Courses Peer Support Groups Personal Trainer/Exercise Qigong Reflexology Reiki Tea and Chat Therapeutic Touch Think Smart Live Well Program Walking Group Yoga
We provide all services 100% free of charge.
We do not receive any funding from the Federal or Provincial governments, nor hospitals, nor any major cancer society or association. We rely solely on donations from individuals, corporations, companies, foundations, and events. We constantly seek opportunities to fund the Centre and the possibility of winning the AVIVA COMMUNITY FUND is wonderful opportunity!
The West Island Cancer Wellness Centre has officially been open for about two years and has already touched thousands of people who have had cancer enter their lives. The need for these services is omnipresent, as is our need for continued funding.
Please help us to help those living with cancer....until there's a cure we will be the hand reaching out to those living with cancer
