Overview:
What Is This Animal Shelter Community Project About?
LAWS’ mission is to find a new property with more acreage within Lanark County to build a new shelter so it can continue to be dedicated to promoting the well-being of all animals. This will be accomplished through fundraising and donations from their supporters.
The Lanark Animal Welfare Society (LAWS) is a 'No Kill" shelter that serves the communities of Perth, Smiths Falls, Carleton Place and surrounding Eastern Ontario rural areas. LAWS was founded 30 years ago to promote the welfare of all animals, provide shelter and care, and prevent cruelty and suffering for those animals in need. LAWS looks after the care of over 1300-1500 animals per year. They are directly responsible for the adoption of over 20,000 dogs & cats since opening their doors. LAWS is growing out of the space they have now.
LAWS in an independent organization and registered charity that survives solely on private donations. LAWS does not receive any funding from any government source. Its operating expenses are met from donations from its members and supporters, adoption fees and fundraising activities such as garage sales, book sales, raffles, craft sales, annual calendar, etc.
Initially, LAWS started out with a small shelter just outside of Lanark Village. In 1986 LAWS purchased one acre of land on Glenview Road and, with the help of 600 supporters, built a small shelter that housed 12 dogs and a few cats. A cat wing was later added and over the years, more additions were added resulting in a shelter that can now house almost 100 cats, dogs and other small animals. There is no more space for expansion and the shelter is over capacity.
The LAWS shelter runs under the supervision of a small paid staff assisted by volunteers who help clean cages, feed and walk the animals and run various events and fundraisers. Some of these volunteers also serve as members for the Board of Directors, helping to make decisions in the operation of the shelter, with a view to improving the long term well being of all animals in Lanark County. Together we can continue to provide shelter for these gentle creatures who do not have a voice of their own.
